Thank you Steve. Yet again your years of experience are of value to us all.

I was in a store last year getting a new pair of swimming trunks and got to talking to the owner of the shop. I'm not sure there was a logical progression in the conversation but I left the store with 3 very cumbersome bundles of this type of hanger held together with elastic bands. I had no idea what to do with them, until now. Thank you.

However, there are so many hangers that I'm afraid I may have to buy more kilts.

    That is indeed a dilemma.

The metal rods that go into the wood came out of their slots, and this was with light weight PV. As far as the bag it folds in an odd fashion ie not in 1/2 and became really cumbersome really fast. 7 Flights in 9 days and in and out of hotels it did not hold up.
Sorry to hear about that. I'll admit I have not taken them on a plane, and am not likely to try. Various airlines have wrecked every piece of hard luggage I've ever handed them, so I would never expect wood hangers in a bag to survive!
(plus, I don't fly any more, but that's another issue)

I will say the hangers are good in the closet, better in my experience than the skirt clips mentioned elsewhere. And I've used the system on many car trips all over the country, a couple train trips, and a cruise, usually carrying at least 3 kilts and assorted jackets, leathers etc. without any issues.

For what it's worth, my kilt hung on two skirt hangers with the clips for about a year, and seems to have been fine; didn't need pressing or anything.

I personally prefer the 4 clip specialty kilt hangers sold by Scotweb and Celtic Croft. I have tried the two x two hanger and three x two hanger techniques and just did not like the doft crease they seemed to leave in the aprons and pleats when folded in half hanging in th coset. I think i own 4 13 oz 8-9 yard wool kilts, 10 16oz 8-9 yd wool kilts, one 8yd PV kilt, and one 16oz 5 yd wool kilt, all in sizes of 44-46" waist and 46-48" hip with 26" lengths, which yields some pretty heavy wieghts to hang (most between 4 and 6 pounds a piece). I have tried the Order of the Gael hangers and kilt kit (indeed a good idea but poorly engineered), and aside from short car trips and those where I need to take both a jacket and kilt in closely matching numbers (each hanger can hold one kilt and one jacket/vest combo) I too have broken hangers twice. The Scotweb/Celtic Croft kilt hangers do not waste space, still fit in my garment bags and travelling luggage, are bullet proof, and do not leave any creases or hanging slouch areas between or outside the clips. I don't have the longevity of experience that Steve has, but considering the experience I have is with big and heavy kilts, I personally think the Scotweb/CC hangers are the way to go for bigger and heavier kilts. YMMV as may your needs. My leftover short 2 clip skirt hangers from trying the other method are now in bastardized use hanging up sporrans with fur or hair that needs to stay in vertical position during storage in order to maintain their shape as well.

Well, I'm with Zardoz. Have tried most every hanger there is and have come to use the House of Gael hangers. One clip can hold an entire 16 ounce tank. Yes, use them at home in the closet. When I travel take them in the car with the kilt in a garment bag.

When I travel by plane with kilts I don't take hangers. I lay the kilts out in the motel room on the back of a chair or couch.

I use a quality skirt hanger with strong sliding clips on a metal rod.Use a plastic clothes pin in the centre for additional support. Inexpensive and functional.

I have two kilts and my wife has a kilted skirt. All are on Order of Gael hangers, (and in his kilt travel bag). All work great, even with traveling to games around Texas. Have never had a kilt come loose from the hanger, no matter how much my 15 year old son throws the bag around. Joe makes a good product. Give him a try. He will even embroider your clan crest, or other personal information on to your kilt bag. Follow Zardoz' link, you won't be sorry.

Sincere thanks to the marvellous Rabble!

    Well . . . I made a decision, and I don't imagine I'll regret it, but I'll find out in time.

First of all, thank you to all who made wonderful suggestions, discussed concerns, and shared links. I knew that was the kind of response I would get and that's why I posted this.

Steve - thank you so much for your inexpensive option - it looks simple and marvellous. Drawback: Two hangers in a closet that's already overcrowded with my liturgical robes etc in the house. Add a third for my jacket, and it's using a large amount of the hanger rod.

Interesting fact about my aging body: My dimensions are cone shaped. I take off my kilt belt, suck in my stomach, and the kilt falls on the floor. To put it on, I just reverse the process. That means that I haven't actually undone the kilt straps since I first adjusted them.

For that reason, the link Zardoz provided intrigued me since I imagine that I can mount the kilt, still strapped shut onto the hanger using only one hanger hook. Thank you Zardoz for that! I don't travel with them much, so Seanachie while I VERY much appreciate your sharing your reservations with me, it's only to hang in my own closet (and use up as little space as possible). If it turns out that I'm wrong, I'll let the rabble know for sure.

A couple of folks suggested the Order of the Gael, and I had a very close look at that. I've had problems in the past with wooden one-clamp hangers with my tr@users so I'm a little leary of that design. What finally pushed me back to Zardoz's original suggestion was Riverkilt's suggestion to just hang my tank over a hotel chair on the few times that I forsee travelling with it, thus solving Seanachie's reservations.

To all those who weighed in, thank you so very much. I respect your opinions and very much appreciate your taking the time to help me out. That's what makes the rabble and this bulletin board so wonderful

    Thank you!!!!
