Me, personally, I don't think patterned top hose work all that well for black tie. To me, they have more of a country wear look and I think they look fantastic for day wear. But for black tie, I'd ideally suggest either Argyle or diced hose (all over pattern), or barring that a nice solid color dress hose.
Yeah, that's what I was afraid of Might tackle diced hose one of these days. . . but nobody hold their breath!

Just an idea here on yarn (one that your yarn shop won't appreciate too much). My wife buys wool sweaters from GoodWill and unravels them. For a buck or two, she gets enough wool for at least two pair of hose. She made herself some cashmere/silk stockings (the sweater was a blend) for six bucks, which is more than she usually pays but she didn't want to miss getting it. She usually waits for $0.99 sale days. If you look, you can get merino, cashmere & all kinds of blends. Just make sure the sweater is fully knitted, not sewn/surged side seams.

Seriously, sorry, not producing for sale or trade. But I appreciate the thought, and all the kind words!

My grandmother used to do something of the sort, recycling (woven) woolen garments into hooked rugs. We treasure the ones that have survived the decades since.
But I have trouble working even with the lightly kinked yarn of my own "make overs," can't imagine having success with that level of recycling. Glad it works for your wife!

The biggest recycling job she has done is with me. And the recycling value on these old bones isn't very high. I am an ongoing project so making hose for others is not gonna happen.
