The car dealer's wife's comment might sound idiotic to you, but really, what else did you expect? It's not like this is Scotland where a kilt is not given a second glance. And her comment is not stereotypical. For North America her comment is perfectly reasonable given that probably the only time she (and most people) see kilts, they're being worn by bagpipe playing persons.
Look at this as an opportunity to educate, and bring awareness. Who knows, maybe you'll convert the car dealer and get big car discounts.
/wishes car had a cd player to play bagpipe music at traffic lights.....
