Hamish's post reminded me of something. I tend to not wear a t-shirt with a tartan kilt. If I do wear a t-shirt of some sort, it is normaly with a canvas kilt.
In the pictures I have in the gallery, I am actually wearing a white undershirt with the canvas kilt. That is because I had removed the plaid flannel shirt I had been wearing over it in a few of the other pictures. I think those are all gardening pictures...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Tank tops go well with kilts as well.
Seriously, no one will give a damn on what you wear with your kilt. People only care what you wear underneath your kilt.

As everyone here has said, you can wear about any shirt with a kilt, just make sure to coordinate it with the kilt's colors.
Remember, the kilt is simply an article of clothing, not a costume or a uniform (although it could be a part of either). Unlike some other articles of clothing, you can dress it up or down, but it is still clothing.

When I wear tshirts with a kilt, they tend to be kilt related tshirts, like my Real Men Wear Kilts shirt, or my USA Kilt "what's up yours?" shirt, other than that, i tend to wear polos or button down shirts

I don't wear tee-shirts out and about much anyway. So, I usually wear what I would otherwise wear with trousers - a button down shirt or a polo.
So, I guess I pretty much conform to what other people above have said.

When it gets really hot (as it does out here in Southern Cali), I wear my SportKilt with (as I mentioned before) an aloha shirt. At a hat of your choice and appropriate footwear, and you're ready to beat the heat and look good.

I noticed Sierra Designs mail order house is having a sale on Ex Officio shirts--they make some that are quite lightweight, casual but a little dressieer than a t-shirt.

I have a black golf shirt with the Houston Highland Games Association badge on it; but, most of the time, I prefer to wear a short-sleeved piper's shirt (very similar or the same to what some are calling a safari shirt) that has my clan badge embroidered above the left breast pocket. These shirts are cool and they also have 2 pockets; so, what man could ask for more? I have purchased a few from Highland Embroidery and a couple of others from a different company, the name of which escapes me.
Moosedog's advice on the nylon tech shirts made by Ex-Officio, Orvis, Columbia, et. al, are also excellent choices! I wear these with jeans and shorts all the time. VERY comfortable and cool.

I found a shot of me wearing a polo shirt with a kilt. I think it makes a nice casual look without being too dressed down. I usually don't wear the shiny black shoes with this, however, opting for more casual footwear.

In warm weather it's hard to beat an Orvis fishing shirt. The back is caped for ventilation which also make it somehow look appropriate for a kilt. I like the long sleeves because they have tabs so you can roll them and they stay in place. (Nice when the sun gets too hot or the evening breeze is too cool) There is a wide variety of colors and fabrics (most fast drying) and they wear forever. Did I mention they are also great for flyfishing?
