where do you put your kilt pin?
That rather depends upon where you want it to tear a hole in your apron when you snag it on something.

At the games on Saturday, a wandering kilt inspector suggested to me that the pin ought to be aligned to the stripe, as shown here: http://www.your-kilt.com/kilt-pin.html

    True?

That really is a matter of choice, I have done that on some kilts but if it doesn't exactly line up is it really that big a deal?

I don't like that, there's not enough contrast to see the kilt pin.

I got my four inch safety pin style blanket pin from Stillwater kilts. They are a few dollars. As far as I can tell, they are nickle plated steel; a magnet sticks to it.

I do know where you can get a sterling silver blanket pin; it is from the UK and costs about a hundred dollars: http://www.scotweb.co.uk/sr_hayst_K17784 .

    * Guess it is listed at $82, but I'm guessing there's shipping etc... *

They are one e-bay and shouldn't cost more than a dollar or two each. Of course you can always check Flamingokilts.biz for decorated/beaded versions.

Actually, I think George7 has the best advice. What good is fashion if it doesn't please the lasses? However, according to the RSPBA standards (if you care what they say), your kilt pin goes approximately 3 inches in and 3 inches up from the lower right corner of your outer apron. The "approximately" part is because you should also align it with the sett of your tartan, i.e. put it in the center of converging vertical and horizontal stripes (or something like that).

But remember, the kilt pin is only a fad attributed to Queen Victoria for it's origins. And, Queen Vic pinned it through both aprons in the event in question, which is a bad idea. It is entirely proper (and perhaps even more Scottish) to NOT wear a kilt pin. This is of course just my opinion, but not wearing one has the added advantages of not putting holes in your kilt, and not risking catching the damn wee thing on something and putting a rip in your kilt.
