Maybe I should ask the question a different way.
The daughter has grown up quite a bit since her custom-made Christina Young tartan kilt. She loves highland dance, but for her at this point it's recreational and not competitive. I need to get her into another outfit and I'm wondering if a SWK heavyweight is an option. It's certainly not expensive, but it has to be suitable for dancing which means SWISH! Opinions?

The heavyweight has swish.
I would worry about the hip to waist ratio for her with the stillwater.
I know you have all the skills it would take to adjust the kilt, and even to traditionalize it, Dixiecat.
And of course, I am not an expert, or a tailor, or a kiltmaker, or any of that stuff.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I agree with Ted: the swish is nice, but will it fit her shape?
The Stillwater has a standard length of 24", a minimum waist size of 30", and the fit will be good for a waist/hip difference up to 6-7". Size 34 feels roughly like a 39 or 40-inch hip. I'm about 33/39.5, and I wear a 34 with the top strap moved.
Since she's used to a traditional kilt, she will initially notice the "pillow-butt" effect from not having the pleats cut out.
And what tartan? I gather that the tartans with white are esteemed for the way they show up when dancing? Of the heavyweight tartans, Black Stewart would probably look best. Maybe?
It may not fit your budget, but you could get a CCK or USAK in Dress Gordon, Dress MacKenzie, or Loud MacLeod. Depending on the depth of pleats, the MM poly-viscose gives a pretty satisfactory swish.
DC, do you have time to sew a kilt? It's fun, but time-consuming.

Thanks for all the advice.
Her shape is adequate for a SWK. She doesn't have the waist to hip ratio that her mother does.
You're exactly right about the colour fluter. I was looking indeed at the Black Stewart which would look awesome with a red jacket/vest. Since she's not competing much (or at all) this outfit would just be for dance school performances.
I'm just pondering if this is the way to go. I have a nice hunk of Dress Saskatchewan in the stash so I can make a kilt, but her vest still fits and it's a deep wine colour!!! So, either I make a completely new outfit which will take me forever, or make only one part of her outfit. Or, I could find a new kilt to match her vest.
Oh well, I'm just trying to cut my costs down especially since this is a rec outfit. Anybody got some tartan or kilt for sale with deep wine as the dominant colour?
Sigh, why do children have to grow?

I've got one of the acrylic stillwaters, and while it's a decent enough kilt, and it does get plenty of wear, It's just too light.
the fabric blows up at the slightest breeze.
