    Solid Blue

I wore solid Blue (I'd like a St Patrick's Blue, but this is Navy) for the 4th of July with a red top and it looked fine. I do get a few more snide remarks with the solid blue over a tartan but matched with a sporran it quells most questions.

A few years back when the Clan Ó Mórdha Society voted on an "official" kilt/tartan, the St. Patrick's Blue was in the running. In the end we chose the solid "Irish Green".

I still really like St. Patrick's Blue however

This link is helpful, another pipe band I had contacted had discontinued wearing it in favor of a tartan.

    Thanks

I have the black "shadow" tartan, and plan on picking up a nice saffron kilt one of these days. I love the black kilt, great for casual wear, but it's cut rather classic, so it doesn't look "utilikilt" casual.. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it just isn't my style.

Personally, I love solid colors! They lend themselves well to tartan accessories. I like to wear a black kilt with black hose and Dress MacLeod accoutrements- flashes and tie. I have 2 green kilts- one a bright "Irish" green and one a nice olive drab, and I have a saffron. I also have a digital camo kilt. And then I have a nice assortment of tartan. Problem with tartan is that I have strong feelings about wearing ones that are not directly associated with me, so solid colors are a great way to go.

I have an Irish Saffron in a box pleat, made by our own John Hart, of Keltoi Gaelic Clothing, that I am very fond of. I may get a green tweed sometime in the future, but for now my kilt buying is over... Now I need to work on my jacket and waistcoats, and accessories.

Have five solid colored kilts. Dark brown Utilikilts leather, saffron (buckskin) RKilts leather, green leather R Kilt, saffron USA Kilt in semi-trad, and Dress Freedom Kilt in Maroon.

Solid color kilts offer the option of putting the tartan or pattern on top.

I agree that solid colours do well with something patterned on top for added visual interest. I have a few small sett, fashion plaid shirts that wouldn't look very good with a tartan kilt but might just look smashing with my green shadow tartan kilt... I've also got a couple Argylle sweaters that I'm going to have to try!

I have a hard time with the truely solid color kilts. The tweeds, on the other hand, I like a great deal, especially with a matching waistcoat and jacket. I guess I consider them like a very subdued tartan.
