I started out with a Sportkilt original in the Edsell Navy tartan then found SWK
and ordered 5 standards in various tartans and one Saffron. Over the past year I have purchased an Irish heritage from Frugal and made 2 Xkilts and one 8 yard knife pleat in 16 oz denim. Personally I prefer the knife pleats because of the way they move and they do keep me warmer in cold weather esspecially the 8 yard denim that I made. I have nothing personally against a modern kilt because I wear both I think that it is more of a personal choice of the individual as to which kilt they choose to wear.

I have started with the "traditional" kilt, 8 yards 13/16 oz., in the family "tartan", Shepherd check (see "avatar") Glad I did, but now would like to get another (big surprise) a little lighter in wool weight and may be a tad shorter (1") in length.

"started out with 1-2 first quality wool tartan kilts and plan to acquire more "
This best describes me, but not exactly. I picked up a Sportkilt in '96 basically to drop my bicycling shorts after club rides. I would air out drinking a brew with my biking buds enjoying all the accompanying freedom.
In 1997, I got my 'first' kilt, a tank in Malcolm tartan. Back then the market was different; internet in its infancy and few contemporary kilt makers.
I picked up some Malcolm tartan and began wearing the Great Kilt.
Got introduced to UKs and AKs in 2005 at Grandfather Mountain Games and began wearing those.
I would discover XMarks at the 2007 Grandfather Mountain Games. Through XMarks, I've added a number of casuals/semitrads/ 5yarders from USAK and B&S, three Box Pleats from Matt.
I want to add another tank, another box pleat and an Alpha Kilt. I will probalbly continue adding casuals and 5 yarders. Yeah, my kilts out number my p*nts and at some point, I'll switch to full time kilt wearing.

I started out with a wool quality tartan kilt. I wanted only tartan associated with my family name / Clan. After that I realized that I didn't want to wear that on a casual basis and made an X-kilt for casual wear. I am now interested in quality wool kilts in all the Ross Tartans, and maybe a couple more contempary for more casual wear. They will most likly be X-kilts as well, I like the idea of sewing my own, not too fond of modern contempary store bought ones that I have seen such as the utilikilt. Not knocking them for those that do like them, just personal opinion.

Let's see - started out with 5-yard wool kilts, got UKs, made a couple cotton duck and canvas kilts, got a Pittsburgh Kilt, got a RKilt, a CCK, an USAK, started making wool and PV kilts, bought a few Matt Newsome box pleats, made more wool and PV kilts, and am currently in the processing of taking apart one of those early 5-yard kilts in order to remake it as a box pleat.
The UKs are gone, sold to various members here - when I want to wear a contemporary kilt, I have my RKilt. For spring, summer, and fall wearing, I have my PV, casual wool kilt, and box pleats. For winter I have my box pleats and my 8-yard kilts. There is a season (and temperature) for everything.
I prefer tartan (most days), but I have some very nice Harris Tweed thanks to Matt.

Started out with budget tartan kilts, now mostly want/wear first quality wool tartan kilts.
The above category I voted for, however I would insert ONLY in place of "mostly want/wear first quality wool tartan kilts".
I started with a budget Black Watch, and have since moved onto Matt Newsome hand sewn (I would one day like to add a Keltoi or two & a Lady Chrystel to my wardrobe as well).

I started out with a 13 oz. wool "Tank" in my clan tartan, then added a couple of Practikilts, a Utilikilt Original, a Sportkilt and two Stillwater kilts. Eventually I want to save my pennies for a IOS in wool or a couple of other tartans that I like.

Started with a Gold Brothers kilt I picked up while attending the highland games solid black to be sure I didn't step on any toes with the tartan police. Since then I have picked up tartan kilts with ties to my family (mostly my mothers side) the range is from SWK wool all the way down to a knock around SWK thrifty for highland games practice. I still wear the Gold Brothers black kilt everyday to work as its within dress code. I'm looking to get a sport kilt for competing in the highland games and maybe some hiking.
I can see my self getting a utilitykilt style kilt some time soon for knocking around town or working on things around the house. all things are as funds become available

I started out with a really good quality kilt which I still have [I'm thankful for good advice! Thanks to Tartan Town, Coquitlam BC]. A permanent part of my collection.
I tried a SWK but didn't like the 'naked-at-the-north-pole' feeling I got in winter. Sold it.
I tried a couple of cotton casuals: the Alpha was excellent except that I have a long stride and found it bunching between my legs. Sold them.
My Builtkilt is nice, but insubstantial.
Up for replacement in the near future.
My 16oz Freedom box pleat: definitely a keeper.
My off-the-shelf Isle of Skye: not bad, but to be replaced in distant future.
Next kilt: still trying to decide, and my tartan may be ready next week.
EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.
