I have a couple of retired regimental tams with tartan backing I wear with jeans, etc. Looks pretty good, in fact. I even have an old 92nd regiment of foot badge (pre-1881) I put on a Gordon tam.
But I would never wear a tartan bonnet. That one that is "popular here in Scotland, especially with the tourists" is all the prood we need.

Well, I have a tartan Tam that I wear while racing Dragon Boats. We also race in kilts, but you can't see the kilt when we are in the Dragon Boats. The tam can be seen from shore and everyone knows who Gung Haggis Fat Choy is when I'm in the boat!

Kind of like a race horse jockey wearing his riding silks, eh?

OK, that's alright. I take it all back. I, too, would probably wear something similar under similar conditions.
But not as Scottish attire, that's all.
