The best way to get started is.... to start. Find some guys that throw, and go throw with them a few times. If you have to drive 60 miles to do it, then do it.. Don't kill yourself, the first month. If you like it, keep it up. Start a regular gym program.

    ...and you're on your way.

Thanks, Kit. It took me 15 years to get there. I actually went out the Golden Gate in 2004, sailed into a 40 knot gale with the rest of the racers, but my boat wasn't up to it. Long story, but I went down below the second day to bail out a mess of water, went up forward and watched the boats hull flex in and out about 6 inches, every time we leaned into a wave. Needless to say, I turned around and headed for Morro Bay. That was NOT a good couple of days.

But I came back in 2008 and made it happen (with a different boat).

Wow Alan - that is very impressive!!! I guess I have to start calling you Captain Alan now??

BTW, Kon-Tiki is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it!! It won an Academy Award in 1951, still very enjoyable today...

Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, Norwegian biologist Thor Heyerdahl suspected that the South Sea Islands had been settled by an ancient race from thousands of miles to the east, led by the mythical hero Kon-Tiki. Heyerdahl knew that the trade winds and ocean currents off the South-American coastline bear in the direction of Polynesia. Ridiculed by the scientific establishment, who had concluded that a voyage by aboriginal balsa raft from Peru to Polynesia was impossible, he decided to prove the possibility of his theory by duplicating the legendary voyage. The ensuing expedition was hailed as one of the most fantastic feats of daring and courage of its time.

    Re: 2012 Goals

I've contacted a Savannah female full tackle football team (no, not the lingere type ;) and asked how to join them, so I guess thats my athletic goal. My fitness goal is to shed some inches and tone up in to make myself a new kilt in time for St. Patrick's Day.
    kilted in Brooklet :)

Lose the notorious holiday ten pounds. At 58 it seems harder every year but, I am about half way there. Walking my new pug puppy this year makes it easyier than it was last year with my geriatric pug.

If you hate gyms, then get some bigass rocks and make a couple of sandbags. Go look on YouTube for sandbag videos. Seriously.

And kettlebells, but there's some significant technique to kettlebells.

Throw the tires. Stack them up and beat the snot out of them with a 12 pound sledgehammer or a 4 foot long heavy steel rod. If you have a big truck tire, try this.

Throw the tire if you can. If you can't, then flip it 3x
Run up to it. Jump into it, jump out of it...repeat 5x
Grab sledgehammer, beat the crap out of it, 10 shots with the hammer held on each side of you.

Repeat all of the above until worn out.

The book is GREAT. Thor Heyerdahl was a really interesting guy. He was dead wrong in his theories about south Pacific anthropology, but he LIVED his life and you have to admire the guy.
