From what I was told some time ago by a policeman friend of mine, the thistle is forbidden in California and anyone growing it is subject to a hefty fine. I asked my nursery for one once as that is also the plant badge of the Stewart clan. They told me it could not be imported to Calif. and my police friend verified that fact.

That interesting, as on Sunday I saw at least three species of thistle happily growing all over the place on San Bruno mountain. Of course, the mountain is peppered with non-native species. However, there are certainly native California thistles.

Apr. 14th. Two miles south of the house is the flood plain of the Yellow Leaf Creek. I was on my way to replace sky lights (roofing job) and found these three treasures along the road side.
