Here's another link that has some useful information about the kilt

    http://www.apparelsearch.com/definit...definition.htm

The section The Kilt Today has:

As with any other form of dress, the kilt is subject to the vagaries of fashion. Since the 1980s, kilts have appeared in such materials as leather and denim. Single colours have also been used in place of tartan, particularly by people without Scottish links in countries such as Ireland or the United States. While these garments may be disliked by traditionalists, they provide evidence that the kilt still has a place in the modern fashion world.
So while your friend may be historically correct, he still needs to get up to date!

Because the kilt is not a costume, it is a garment.
Sounds like your buddy is getting a little too uppity about clothing. You can point out equally silly fashion "rules" that he may be unconciously violating: wearing white shoes after Labor Day, wearing dark socks with shorts, mixing stripes and patterns, not matching his belt color to shoe color, wearing a adjustable pre-tied bow tie with a standup collar shirt, etc.

The fashion police are out there (and self-elected).

Now, If I could only get my hands on one of those Kilt police badges . . .

Tell your "Kilt Cop" friend that fashion has always been changing and evolving. Never stays the same. Current fashion is always on the edge of the envelope and beyond.

The only rule is there are no rules.

The only thing constant is change.

Some friend....I'd probably loose my common two word response to shaming messages were those comments directed a me.

Kilt on, any way you please.
