Why let that stop you? I'm going to wear a kilt to the AZ Renaissance Festival when it rolls around. Renaissance festivals almost never worry too hard about absolute authenticity (at least none that I've been to). Just don't make the mistake of thinking that your modern kilt is any part of an authentic renaissance outfit.

    okay, i might do that.

i read that picts and hibernian scots wore belted plaid around the tenth century and norse settlers and irish settlers wore pleated skirt-like garments, any of this possible?

Consult Matt Newsome's article on the history of the kilt at http://albanach.org/kilt.html.

My favourite tartan myth is Tartan Ogham. If I remember it correctly, some exalted person in the clan carried around a stick (probably a cromach or shillelagh! ) with threads wrapped around so as to remember the clan tartan thread count!

I hear that if it's not Scottish it's crap.

Which reminds me, I have been told that I cannot wear a kilt, not because I am not Scottish (which I am a bit) but rather because I am in America, and that it was never meant to be worn here. I replied that while the kilt was not invented here, neither were the pants she was wearing. And of course, while my kilt was made here in the states, odds are her entire wardrobe was made by a bunch of kids in Asia.
