Ok, one more thought - random perhaps...
I can remember meeting in Texas, I met a chap once who put his arm around me and said "Son, do you feel like a Texan"
My response, ...timid... well yes sir, today I feel like a Texan.
His answer "If you feel like a Texan, then you are a Texan"
I would apply that logic to kilts and being "Scottish".

Hi, i have no Scottish or Irish blood in my veins, buth alltough i am wearing kilts every day at home, in public and on the job. Many people ask me why i wear a kilt. Sometimes my answer is; i don't have anything else to wear. Other times; some men need more space than others. Always very positive reactions, except for one occasion when we met a Scottish guy in a bar who could not understand that a non-Scottish guy was wearing a kilt while his grandfather was in battle for that during the war ( i tought war was started for an other reason.) and then especially two queer guys. i must say the guy was very drunk and i think that he wouldnt remember the conversation the day after. Nevertheless, i still wear my kilts with proud and dignity. In three weeks i am going to be wed with my partner and it will be in full Highland outfit together with the whole family and friends. Everybody is invited.

Hi fellow Graham
Good advice why not wear the Graham Tartan you are very wellcome to be associated with us. My thoughts only of course. It would probably be better to wear the Pride of Scotland as it would be easier to justify. But I'll second all those that I said you could , and refer anyone who says otherwise back to us if they have the bottle.

Check out this from the forum's opening page. It is the welcome statement for Xmarksthescot.
Welcome to X Marks the Scot - A Kilt Forum
X Marks the Scot is an international community of kilt wearers and those who encourage the wearing of kilts. Kilts are a man's garment and it is our goal to promote the wearing of the kilt in more than just the "Highland Games" situation. This is not a forum for men looking to wear womens clothing nor is it a forum for other types of men's un-bifurbricated garments. If you want to know more about kilts then you have come to the right place!
You do not have to be Scottish to post here or to wear a kilt. The name of this forum was chosen a while ago for different purposes and yet this website has evolved into what it is today. Please do not let the name deter you from posting.
To join in the fun, Register with us today.

I had the same problem (initially). Being Italian and having only a lot of shortbread in my veins (when a baby) and a lot of scotch (even 17 y.o.) now. I buyed and weared mine with a little of fear in the beginning, then the rugby weekend helped me a lot. Wear it and don't worry, I'm finding new occasion to put it on again. :
