Easy* Two-Page Kilt Instructions
The Costumer's Manifesto is a wonderful resource for finding historical patterns and so on; one of the items that's quite nice is a Victorian/Edwardian tailor's guide, in 13 parts. The Cutter's Practical Guide to Cutting and Making ... includes all sorts of kilt-related goodies, including a kilt pattern and instructions.
http://www.costumes.org/HISTORY/vict...ges/03_098.htm is the instructions, and http://www.costumes.org/HISTORY/vict...ges/03_099.htm is the diagram. Easy-peasy. Buy some tartan and get cracking!
Seriously, I found the instructions really interesting, with explanations of how to handle pleating for tweeds and tartans, and the assumption that the kilt would include buttons for suspenders (braces in the original).
I may try the highland doublet pattern sometime.
*If you're a Victorian tailor. If not, YMMV.

I wouldn't tackle it myself but I like the look of some of these waist coats.
I really need to do something about this itch to find a vest for a kilt.

J. Higgins sells a black wool waistcoat for $50.

Thanks for the link. My wife is going to roll her eyes when I tell her all of the new ideas I have for her to work on.
Also, don't overlook these pages:
http://www.costumes.org/HISTORY/vict...ages/13_22.htm
http://www.costumes.org/HISTORY/vict...ages/13_23.htm
And then there's this one:
http://www.costumes.org/HISTORY/vict...ages/09_44.htm
http://www.costumes.org/HISTORY/vict...ages/09_45.htm
These last two links have a lot of info on formal and sporting clothing of the Highlands, including info on sporrans and how the cut of the more casual jacket.

EDIT: Spoke to J. Higgins, price is in fact $60, they suggested the link was probably old. Still a good value in my book.
Best regards,
Jake

I downloaded a patern from them a while back for an Inverness coat, but as it's rarely cold enough for even a sweater here, I've never gotten around to it.

I find it a bit odd/amusing that Part 9, which contains the above instructions for Highland jackets, has hints on accomodating "humpbacks" as a prominent section in the text and not as a footnote.
