Geocaching and my first full day kilted
I broke down and bought a replacement camera today and to celebrate the kids and I went geocaching. For you Muggles (geocache-speak for the uninitiated) geocache is a modern treasure hunt using gps (global positioning satellite). It is a world wide hobby where someone leaves a little cache to be found and posts the coordinates online for others to find. Ussually there are small toys and such to trade so the cache is always renewing in items.
My son wouldn't let me go in public in a kilt before because he was afraid what others might say. I finally had to sit him down and explain that no-one would dare f*** with a man in a kilt and after spending the day with me out and about he's starting to accept it.
First stop was Future Shop to buy a camera. No comments from anyone and from what I saw no obvious glances! I'm wearing an FK in desert camo and no comments, nothing. Us Canadians are typically non-confrontational but I'd expect at least one raised eyebrow.
Off to geocaching with the team:
l-r The geezer(41), Alec (9) & Taylor (almost 7).
Onward to the first coordinates:
Found the first cache (tupperware wrapped in camouflage tape hidden in a tree):
Coordinates to the second cache:
The spawn waiting for the old man:
Crossing marshes and bridges:

Almost there:
Gotta be hidden here somewhere:
Bingo!:
And the loot:
Pleat shot:
Met people on the trail, no comments again. But Man was I comfortable hiking in a kilt, 'tis the only way to hike. The kids and I had a great time on a successful hunt but the highlight was find the elusive Trillium. Ontario's provincial flower and illegal to pick. IMHO this would make an awesome kilt pin on the Ontario tartan that one day I will get:
The rest of the day was spent mowing the grass, washing the car and some errands. Finally got a comment from the neighbour across the street. "Is that a kilt" he asked "I haven't seen a kilt in years, I love it"
here's looking to more full days kilted.

Looks like fun. Nice kilt, and I can't believe you are as old as you state in your bio, wow, the kilt makes you look like 20 something!
DALE.
You don't have to be Scottish to be comfortable!

Excellent pics! Is geocaching like orienteering? I used to do a little orienteering to keep the map and compass skills up and have some fun, but I haven't in a long time. The kilt looks great and the kids look like they had a good time, too.
[b][SIZE=2] In Soviet Russia, kilt wears you.

It is like orienteering. A gps will get you close but in many cases you're working under acanopy of trees which renders your gps less acurate. Sometimes you're working with an accuracy of 30 feet plus the original placement of the cache had a limited accuracy on that gps. The size of the cache could be anything from a 35mm film canister to an ammo box. The kids love it, gets them outdoors. For those interested go to geocaching.com. There's undoubtedly tens of thousands of caches around the world just waiting.

Looks like fun. I might start doing some in the desert out here, where you will need 4wd to get the caches.
You might also want to let your son know it isnt just that no one will mess with a man in a kilt, but also that it doesnt matter what someone else's opinion is. You do things because they are right, not because they are popular.
