Another shoe advice thread

I am picking out shoes for my wedding.
I like the Doc Martin brogues, but they are out of my price range for now.
I am not a big fan of traditional 'Ghillie' brogues nor yet traditional buckled kilt shoes. (They just give me bad memories of girls in primary school wearing mary janes.)
So, what do you guys think of these?


Good price, good quality and I really do like them.
But, do they pass muster for a wedding?

Would Hamish, lord of kilted style, be seen in them?

I found these locally and was thinking of buying a pair. I have 2 pairs of their boots and they are awesome.

They're Nunn Bush shoes...don't know if that brand is available in the UK.

Of course, with that MIGHTY BRITISH POUND they'd be a bargain if the shipping and duties aren't crippling.

I was shoe shopping only yesterday. I saw what I really wanted; Florsheim "Lexington" wingtip brogues with a really high polish; almost like patent leather, for $100. On the way home I stopped by a second-hand store, and found a pair of virtually unused wingtip brogues for $6.00. Once they're properly bulled up, I'm quite sure that they'll do just as well, for a savings of $94.00.

Oooh, nice find.

Being a short bloke I find it hard to get shoes in my size.
The only brogues I like that I can find in my size are wayyyy out of my price range.

But, I like those rope buckles. I may get some of those and have the cobbler put those on for me.

I think with a really good coat of polish they will be great! I think they are dressier than either the Doc Martens or the Deerstags. The Nun Bush look ok, but inexpensive brogues usually don't cut the muster so I would be sceptical of the picture, especially with a kilt. Remember shoes are seen much more with a kilt than with trousers

For kilt formal I think your much better off with shoes like you pictured than cheap brougues.

You can also look for a par of MOD surplus kilt brogues.

Actually, I got a pair of the Nunn Bush shoes and they're pretty good. They're more of an "everyday go to work" shoe than a formal dress shoe. My regular dress shoes are very plain oxfords from Wright and they just don't look right with the kilt. The Nunn Bush are sort of "boxier" and look a lot better. I should also mention that they run a bit small so look for a half size up.

But as you said they are a dress shoe, and I think that is what Arlen is looking for for his wedding. Personally I prefer Church's brogues. Unfortunately thanks to the dollar they have become very expensive, but luckily they tend to last about ten years.

In a way they compare to a good handmade kilt.
