Sam Browne belt
Has anyone ever used a Sam Browne belt? I have an old one that is too small for my aging figure, but the leather is so supple and feels much better than other belts I have tried.

A Sam Browne looks good over a khaki jacket when worn with military uniform, but doesn't really work when worn over a shirt and kilt. The belt part looks okay with a kilt, but the shoulder strap just doesn't make it unless worn over a jacket. Like a lot of military items that look sharp with a uniform, they don't quite cut it when mixed in with civilian attire.
You should be able to get a new (black) Sam Browne from any USMC uniform supplier.

I wear one just about every day. Well, A nylon version but same principle. I think they look good on a kilt.

Sam Browns look great with kilts.
No should strap, that's a separate piece.
For a good deal check your local uniform supply store, serving police, security, etc...

I wear one from time to time with my Marine dress blues for certain formal events, e.g. as the adjutant at the Birthday Ball, as a groomsman for a Marine wedding, etc. The current Sam Browne is Corfram, basically patent leather, instead of the regular leather version that was used last century and is only worn by officers. My understanding is that other branches of the U.S. military do not use it.
I'm not trying to be offensive, and this is merely my personal opinion, but I think it would be a little ridiculous to wear a Sam Browne belt unless it was as part of an authorized uniform, maybe as part of a colorguard or the like.
I think part of the reason that non-kilt wearers see the kilt as a "costume" vice an article of clothing is because of "accessories" that are often paired with it. I haven't seen anyone walk around with a military dirk while wearing a business suit, the same goes for the Sam Browne. By going with a "kitchen sink" accessories approach you often overwhelm the beauty of a kilt.
If you're looking for a variety of quality leather belt options, I'd suggest Occonee Leatherworks. They have a wide variety of styles and colors.
Cordially,
David

This may just be semantics, but without the shoulder strap I believe it's called a garrison belt. When you add the shoulder strap the garrison belt becomes a Sam Browne belt. I don't think anyone would have a problem with someone wearing a garrison belt, but beyond that I have to agree with David's comments. Unless it is part of an authorized uniform, a Sam Browne, when worn with civilian attire, is "over the top".
