    Question Why are sporrans round?

...or in the case of Rob Roys, without corners?

I don't own a sporran proper, relying mostly on the canvas pouch that comes with my AKs. Occasionally I use a leather bag when I feel a little more dressy.

Yesterday I was doing a little more walking than usual while wearing the leather 'non-sporran' and I could distinctly feel the corners poking the inside of my thighs when walking. It didn't leave a mark or anything but was definitely annoying.

Is this why traditional sporrans are rounded in shape at the bottom?

    Yes, the answer is 42.

Rob Roy style sporrans are rounded because they evolved from very simple bags, I suspect. No idea for the others, however. Your theory seems reasonable.

I suspect that because it was the fastest pouch to make.

Take a round piece of leather, punch evenly space holes around the edge, run a leather drawstring through the holes, gather it up and tie around the waist. Simple and effective.

I would also guess this is where fur sporrans came from as well. Even simpler. No hair removal required.

Of course, I'm probably wrong, but it makes sense to me!

Because it is pleasing to the eye. Probably has a touch of highly refined, barbaric savageness ... an archetypal connection to the deep, inner beast mind. The one right after the lizard brain...

    Especially on a Wallace tartan...

So the corners can't jab you somewhere uncomfortable!
