The Royal Scotsman Excursion Train
In today's edition of the European Stars and Stripes (paper published by the US Military) there is a Travel Section feature on The Royal Scotsman.
Here is a link http://epaper.stripes.com
The writer of the article says that it now runs excursions from Edinburgh through the highlands. Trips are for 2 to 7 nights. The train carries up to 36 people. You are piped aboard at Edinburg's Waverley Station by a piper in full kilt (his picture is prominently displayed on the cover of the Travel Section).
I'll let you read the rest of the article if you are interested. You too can have this experience for only $3,610 for two nights (per person, double occupancy) or up to $10,680 for the 7 day trip. You will have to wait until 2010 because the 2009 season is booked solid.
Little too rich for me, but someone might be interested (or how many kilts will that buy?)
For me, I'm taking Friday off. Going down to the resort of Garmisch in the German south. Tomorrow evening is a holiday reception for the military folk there and I'll be wearing a kilt for sure.
Enjoy the article.

Sounds like it would be an amazing ride. But like you said...a bit on the pricey side.

Have fun in Garmisch. I was stationed in Augsburg, Bavaria, so I got down to Garmisch a few times. I also experienced a week-long stay at Grafenwoehr with an artillery unit so better understand artillery, being an intelligence analyst for Soviet activities.

You have to access the Dec 4 edition, in case anyone was lost like me.
Also, the story can be found in HTML format here.

Well strip ma gears an' call me shiftless. That is mighty dear.
Try renting a car and creating your own itinerary. For that amount of frogskins, two people can see the country much more personally and at their own pace for two weeks.

I once saw The Flying Scotsman on a main line in England a few years back, she had a diesel engine at the rear. One bystander said this was in case she broke down, they had to be able to keep the line clear for scheduled trains. But other bystanders commented "didn't ought to break down, the prices they charge". Just came to mind as I read this thread.

I've seen this train a few times, in fact it passed by during the Burntisland Highland Games last summer, but it is not something I would likely ever travel on as it is seriously expensive.
