    Starship maintenance

Okay...I'm sure that many of you, like me, are waiting for the new Star Trek movie to come out. They posted the first "teaser" trailer a while back:

    Trailer one...

    http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/

...so we get to see very little of the Starship Enterprise...it's a teaser, right? But we do get to see a guy who's welding and actually is getting dirty. This had me thinking...

Some of you guys have been in the Navy, the Air Force, Armored Divisions...when you do maintenance, you get dirty. Ever see them do maintenance in Star Trek? Two guys walk around with a clipboard and a tri-corder stopping here and there, taking readings and nodding their heads. That's it. Ship the size of a city and I swear that I have never seen anybody break a sweat keeping it running. Nobody scraping, nobody painting...what's the deal?

And this new movie is a retro take on Kirk and Spock's early years...remember the problem that they said they were going to have with "Star Trek: Enterprise"? How do you convince people that this is advanced future technology when the viewer already has a cell phone that's smaller than Captain Kirk's communicator? "Spock...can you hear me now?"

Suspend disbelief...suspend disbelief...just enjoy the movie....

    Heres the new trailer

But come on Montgomery Scott did sweat to keep the Enterprise running remember the amount of time he spent in the Jeffreys Tube?

That's why Star Wars is better -- it has a "retrofitted future" look to it. Star Trek looks to clean and polished, as it was, well, built brand new.

I have it from a reputable source that the reason stuff doesn't get smaller in the future is it's too easy for humans to set your 1" X 1" tricorder down and forget where you laid it.
And because no one has pockets in their uniforms there is no place to put your stuff.
So 85 Psychiatrists, 32 Behavioral Scientists, and 168 Engineers, in a study that lasted 8 years, concluded that no piece of equipment aboard a Star Ship would be smaller than a tribble. It only makes sense because you know how hard it was to lose one of those.

I've heard the analogy that if auto technology had developed like computer tech, cars would only cost one dollar and get 1 million miles a gallon. Of course, they would all be the size of Matchbox cars.

Although that tricorder may not be very small, it probably has way more computing ability that our largest current megacomputer.

And yeah, they didn't get dirty doing maintenance on the Enterprise. The only person to ever get dirty was Kirk on a planet, and he usually ripped his shirt too.

Star Trek: Voyager. They rebuilt that thing every other weekend. And one character even restored a old shuttle craft, built a new one, and had a holodeck program where he was restoring a 'classic' car.

Oooooh yeah...and when Kirk went down to a planet, getting dirty was the one thing on his mind....

Can't you just hear Shatner singing "I'm Too Sexy For My Shirt" right now?

I love and hate to think of Shatner singing anything.
