    Kilts and NASCAR Daytona 500

    Kilts and NASCAR Daytona 500

A couple of years ago I renovated my house, did a lot of the construction work and all of the general contracting myself. In the course of dealing with all of the different trades, I met an fellow rouge and likeminded “toolaholic”. Together we wound up tiling about 2200 sq. ft, put on a 4400 sq ft. metal roof, built a 58’ long retaining wall, changed out 28 windows, 5 doors, put up 95’ of 6’ picket fence and a few other things, so we got to know each other pretty well.

As all thing go, when you are done with a project, you tend to loose touch with the guys who help you, but Tracy and I keep in touch by send each other interesting things we find on the inter-net, and sharing a love of pyrotechnics. The bigger the boom, the better.

Anyway, after church yesterday, I bopped over to Weasel’s to investigate the possibility how to create more room for his daughter and grand kids. Then over to Tracy’s Daytona 500 party. Kilted of course. Now both Tracy and his lady had seen pictures of me Kilted, but never in person.

As I walk in the party is well under way, I get the usual double takes from some , grab a beer and settle in. The first one to really say anything was Justine. Justine is seven maybe eight , and she’s never seen a guy in a kilt, or so I thought. She follows me from room to room with a wide eyed fascination that only young kids have. She finally gathers up her courage and says “My name is Justine” and presents me her hand. I tell her it is my pleasure to meet her, bow and kiss the back of her hand. She then says “ My “camp” name is Princess Daria, and I think your kilt is very pretty”; Mom who has been watching all this pipes up and says “We Do SCA, and her dad wears a great kilt, but only at gatherings”. It appears that “camp” is an SCA gathering.

Well for the rest of the night, Princess Daria was my shadow; interjecting comments every now and then, about her preference for Kilts, and guys like her daddy and Minister Bruce. Normally my wife is my wing-man, but tonight it was Princess Daria.

Several of the ladies at the party were un-attached, and as the night wore on I seemed to notice a larger percentage of them were hovering around me than some of the more eligible (and younger) guys. One in particular was giving me a wee bit of a hard time, until the subject came around to Rodeo; then Tracy lets it out that I used to ride bulls, like to blow things up, and generally am on crazy dude and if she doesn’t believe him look at the knife in my sock. (the conversation was a touch more colorful). Her attitude changes, of course it might have been the Margaritas, but she defiantly got friendlier.

By now, the race is under rain delay, and as we are hoping for it to resume “The Question” comes up. I parry and riposte with the best; Shoes and Socks…ect. Knowing that there would be kids of all ages at the gathering I was not in fact regimental, but I was having fun trading comments with mostly these ladies. Then I felt it, the one who had been the “rodeo” buff was standing to my side and was intending to initiate a full KC.

Did I mention I had a Wing-Lass? Before my “assailant” could complete her mission, Princess Daria steps between her and I, and says “At camp, Ladies and Gentlemen, keep their hands to themselves”. You could have heard a pin drop. The “assailant” turns a bright red, Princess Daria’s mom beams with pride and I am “saved” by a well educated and polite 8 year old Princess! Of course the whole room breaks out laughing till it’s hard to breath.

As I bid my adieu, I feel a tug on my kilt, I look down and It’s my wing-lass, and she say’s “Mama and Daddy say it’s ok, if you want to come to “camp” with us”. It’s been years since I have been to an SCA gathering, but with an invitation like that; I might just have to take the Princess up on it.

Fantastic story!! You can just bet that there will be a kilted groom when young "Princess Daria" gets married sometime in the future.

That's a good tale. While somewhat disappointing for you, the story ended the way it needed to.

I think you need to get your new "wing-lass" a present of some kind; maybe a stuffed sheep or Hielan' coo. She sounds like a very smart kid, and one that her parents should be very proud of.

Princess Daria is a most proper and goodly hostess. A fine and gracious queen she will make. And a wonderful story for you recall and tell on an occasion.

That story is absolutely fantastic. What a wonderful young princess, and a fine woman she will make. I know her parents are proud, and you are honored to have such fine friends.
