    My First Hunting Sporran

Thought I'd post my first attempt at a leather cantled hunting type sporran. Although I did not get quite the "pear" shape, I was attempting something like the Britt Ferguson sporrans. Being too poor, I couldn't afford one of his works of art, so I ended up with this. I found the leather at a remnants store, and bought enough to make three or so sporrans for about $25 US. The vegetable tan was scraps from a bundle sold by our local Farmer's Co-op for five bucks. The stitching is hemp thread (which I waxed ) normally used for hemp jewelry. In retrospect the holes for the fastening braid should be smaller. Here is a picture (please excuse the cell phone pictures) with the stuff I normally carry: wallet, tobacco pouch, lighter, pipe tool, cigar cutter, tin of Bengal Slices (more pipe tobacco!), pocket knife (don't leave home without one!), guitar picks and change (flask is for special occasions).

I included a cell phone pocket on the back, but my wife thinks I shouldn't use it in public (looks too suspect fumbling around there, she says). The scrap holding the D rings is from an old belt, and is held on with 2 Chicago screws.

Here's a picture with everything in:

My sporran strap is a belt from Good Will ($1 US), with 2 rings held in place by Chicago screws, braided leather and 2 quick release scraps.

In all I guesstimate that I have less than $30 in the sporran and belt. Here's a picture of me wearing the rig with my buddy Punch at our local smokeshop:

Comments and suggestions welcome. Constructive criticisms much appreciated!

    Thumbs up

I think you did a great job! I love the look of those kinds of sporrans. Thanks for sharing with us.

That is great! Start to finish is thrifty, personal, good looking, practical. When you win the lottery you can buy a nice dress sporran. For practicality I think you get an A+! Good job.

That's such a classic look. Like it's been passed lovingly from father to son several times, and gets better with each generation.

Well done!! I have a simple sporran pattern of which I made my first sporran 15 years ago....I still use it, often when doing Jacobite. Yours is a good look and very practical.

Oh, that turned out great! I don't see anything I'd improve on it.
