What boots for a Highlander?
It seems a rare choice; but, I'm wondering if there is/was a traditional Scot-style of boot as differentiated from the contemporary English styles through the ages; or, were quality European footwear more universal than I presume?
I know that one sees a great deal of conventional shoes in opposition to anything resembling modern ghillie-brogues in period dress, and that boots were more a mainstay of equestrians (both by habit as well as class) generally... Perhaps boots were more common in the Border regions of Scotland where horses were more often used for personal transportation?
Also, any advice regarding wearing boots with kilt-hose (is any required?) would be appreciated.

I'm assuming that because you posted in Kilt Accessories rather than the Traditional or Historic threads you mean what one would wear today. I know that Hunter boots are from Scotland. Personally I would find any waterproof hiking boot that is sturdy and wear it with hose that matches my kilt. If it is cold enough pull up the hose, otherwise I would scrunch it down around the ankles.

I'm interested in all those topics, actually; but, principally so that I mightn't be thought foolish wearing boots with my kilt this autumn.
Hunter Boots? What are their distinguishing features? D'you mean these: http://www.hunter-boot.com/1/Welcome...r-Wellies.aspx ?
Thanks for your input!

They're rubber boots. I know that they were a wartime manufacturer of boots that were the envy all over Europe. They're mainly used now for sport. But like I said before, I prefer boots like Timberland or Wolverine.

Those are the ones! Generally speaking (other than on this forum) I don't think you'd find too many people wearing wellies and a kilt. If you are going to do it, I'd suggest you stick with the traditional green. The visual image of hot pink wellies just sends a shiver down my spine...

I had a great pair of black wellies made by Sperry long before I got my kilt. Hiking boots for the terrain or casual shoes or dress shoes. Bean Boots work for me too. Mostly don't dress for what you think others might think. Dress in a way that you feel comfortable with. I think there are a lot of fellas out there wearing kilts worrying about what others think. It probably shows. Wear what you feel comfortable with and pity those who are uncomfortable with that.

From what I've read/seen, no.

Historically, a Scot riding a horse would wear trews or trousers rather than a kilt. Lowland Scots wore trousers in general. The kilt is specific to highland dress.

I usually (but not always) wear my hose scrunched down with no flashes when I wear boots with a kilt. I just think it looks better.

I usually wear Tactical type black military lace boots with my Black Watch only. And turn down my kilt hose neatly to the top of the boots, no flashes, of course.

That, my friend, is one area where you and I are in total accord.
