Color choices

Hello all!

A while back I purchased a Thompson Grey kilt from USA Kilts. I love it their kilts, and I love that tartan. My problem, however, is that I feel very limited in regards to what colors look good with it. It's a dull color, and so I feel obligated to wear dull colors with it. Maybe its just me, so what are some others' thoughts?

And btw, every year near my home is a music festival called "The Great Blue Heron". You camp out for 3 days in the woods and enjoy wonderful music. We have a very wildly decorated campsite. Pink flamingos, mailboxes, banners, candles....and I always wear a kilt. Well this year I got several other people to wear kilts too. So here's a picture of that, just for good measure! I'm the youngest one in the pic.

Well it does have a red stripe, you can always wear red with it. I've found that you can wear a completely different colour as well if you want to, it need not be in the tartan. For example here is the Royal Naval Association tartan it does not have burgundy in it but I think it works well.

With the Thompson grey being somewhat neutral, I would think you could wear most any colours. One tip that may help is to wear hose coloured to match your shirt. That way, the kilt is "framed". Another theme would be to keep the hose matched to the kilt
(oatmeal or smoke) and go with a bright shirt (green, red).

Big Mikey is right. What you've got there is a neutral, so almost anything will go with it. And rather than drab, I'd say you can go for intense colors if you like: cobalt blue, kelly green, hunter green, almost any shade of red, plum. If that's too much, I don't see why lighter colors wouldn't work, either: powder blue, light pink, pale yellow, light turquoise. Looks like you've got three shades (or tones) of gray on that tartan, so pick a color and match a tone, and you're good to go.

I think, Glen, that you have exactly the right idea. If the 'Top' and 'Toe' are matched up, in most instances the look will work. It would have to be very weird colours for it not to work.

Personally, I would stick with the pure rich colors and stay away from the tints and pastels. IMHO the pastels would just be a wash out. The only situation I wold use them is for an accent. For instance, gray kilt, black argyle and vest, lavender tie.

Oddly enough, the only other colors other than pastels that I would avoid with Thomson Gray are gray and tan.

I'm a fellow Thompson grey wearer, I don't have much of a problem finding things to go with it,the grey(s) really allows lots of permutations, sometimes it is just a case of trying different colours, I think you would be surprised how versatile it is.
