    Hose Toppers

It seems every day I come on here I see another example of great knit work. Sweaters, Hose, Hose Toppers, Hats, you name it. It seems if you can think it one or more of the rabble have made it. Well I finnaly got the motivation to start my own project. I've started knitting some hose toppers. I've never knit before so this could be good or it could be an abomination to God.

After getting the baisics of casting on, and the knit stitch i made a trial run of 20 stitches for 4 rows to get an idea on gauge. I needed to know how many stitches and how many rows to make the toppers so they would fit fat legs. I ended up selecting 44stitches by 20 rows in a garter stitch patern. I'm knitting this with chunky acrylic yarn on US #10 needles.

Its a deep crimson yarn I hope to have the pair done in time for Christmas so I can wear them to my parents house with some green hose a red shirt and my Black Stewart kilt. Should look just festive enough I think. This is my first attempt at kitting or making my own kilt accessorie. I'll post Pics once I get a chance as well as the finnished product, Crossfingers

Big Mikey You make by far some of the nicest Hose Toppers I've seen. I'm assuming you knit on the round with 3 or 4 double point needles?

As this is my first attempt at knitting anything I have the plan of kniting a pannel and then seaming the 2 ends together to make the cuff. This will also hide the cast on tail as well as the cast off tail in the seam. Does this sound like a good approach to you or is knitting in the round easier and I'm just thinking too much about juggling all those needles?

As a fellow self-taught amateur, I have a couple comments. First, it's great that you're picking up the art. Be careful though, because it's highly addictive. I'm teaching my girlfriend to knit right now. Second, be patient, and don't be too surprised (or upset) if you end up knitting three or four hose toppers before you have one you actually like. And third, I personally find knitting in the round much easier. I have a problem sewing the seams together, so as long as I use a stitch marker at the beginning of the round, using double-pointed needles (or a circular needle for larger projects) just makes more sense. I'm looking forward to seeing your work. Feel free to post pics as you go.

So yeah got a little motivated at work today(I work evening security at a very slow hospital) I managed to complete both toppers. I seamed them together once I got home.

Great looking toppers! That's a perfect first project.

Here's a link to a good tutorial on seaming, if you aren't happy with your results:

    Cheers, and knit on!

In the way of unsolicited free advice, I'd recommend attaching the toppers to your hose with the seams to the inside of your legs.

They look really nice, by the way, and yes, you are over-thinking knitting in the round. I prefer it to flat work.
