Charleston (SC) Brewvival
I attended my first beer festival this past weekend in Charleston, SC, Brewvival. It was their first year, well attended and well behaved.
If you've never been to one, my advice is to pace yourself, and don't try to sample every variety there. Either you'll get pissed, or they all kind of run together, or in my case a little bit of both.
Below is a list of the brewers there and what they were giving out. They were in alphabetical orders, and I started with the local brewer, Coast Brewing, and worked my way around the lower side of the alphabet, not getting to sample all of them. I had a pencil and took brief notes for some. I happen to prefer 'hoppy' IPAs, and my palette isn't the most sophisticated, but I'll include my impressions, if any.
Allagash-
Hugh Malone Belgian IPA, nice hoppy flavor with a hint of grapefruit.
Odyssey Belgian Strong Dark Ale
Avery-
Mephistopheles Imperial Stout
American Strong Ale Both of these were very 'aggressive',too strong for my taste
Bells
Batch 9000 Imperial Stout (didn't sample)
Expedition Stout Cask, Hopslam Double IPA (out when I got there) and Oarsman Berliner Weisse
The Bruery
Oude Tart Flanders Red Ale and Saison De Lente (didn't sample either)
Breckenridge
471 IPA and Lucky U IPA (sampled, hoppy but it was late in the day)
Brooklyn
Black Chocolate Stout and Manhattan Project Rye Beer (sampled, no notes)
Coast
Blackbeerd Imperial Stout (nice, new brew released the next day), Barrel Aged Blackbeerd, Red Legs Scotch Ale Barrel Aged (malty) and a Smoked Porters I didn't try
Dogfish Head
Immort Ale American Strong Ale, Chateau Jiahu Spiced beer, Chicory Stout and Midas Touch spiced beer
Duck Rabbit
Marzen, Milk Stout and Cherry Madness (too sweet, too cherry). I don't think I liked the Marzen either
Duck Hills
Sexual Chocolate Imperial stout, Hoppyum IPA and total Eclipse Stout aged in Pappy Van Winkle barrels. Didn't care for the sexual chocolate. The Eclipse was interesting, a slight whiskey aroma and slight whiskey taste. It was interesting, but not something I would drink too often.
Highland
Black mountain bitter cask English style Pale Ale, Big Butte Smoked Porter and Auld Asheville Vintage ale.
New Belgium
Love Flanders Red Ale and Ranger IPA (I happened to have the Ranger for lunch a couple days earlier. It's hoppy)
New South
Dark Star Porter and Winger Fest Barrel Aged
Ommegang
Rouge Flanders Red Ale and Inauguration Ale American Stout
I apparently didn't have any of the Flanders Red Ales. I wish I had now that I see it was offered by more than one brewer
Oskar Blues
Stranahan Barrel aged Dales Pale and Stranahan barrel aged gordon double IPA
Palmetto
Coffe Porter (sorry I missed this one) Chocolate Bock, Pale ale Cask, Watermelon Wheat (would have liked to try this)
RJ Rockers
Fish Paralyzer Belgian Pale and Black Perle Black IPA
Rogue
John John Whiskey Barrel Dead Guy Helles Bock and Double Dead Guy
Southern Star
Buried Hatchet Imperial stout, Saison
Southern Tier
Cuvee Two American Strong Ale, Mokah American Stoug, Jahva American coffee stout
Stone
2008 Bourbon barrel imperial stout, Vertical epic 08.08.08 Belgian IPA
Sweetwater
Belgian Quad Dank Tank Cask, IPA
Terrapin
KaptN Krunkles Black IPA, Dugout Oak Aged Wake N Bake, Hopsecutioner IPA
Thomas Creek
Deep Water Dobblebock, Up the Creek IPA-randallized and Pump House porter-oaked. I'm very sorry I missed the randallized IPA. For those who don't know, it's a plastic cylinder filled with hops and the beer is forced through it during the pour. I didn't even know it was there until I read a review the next day.
12% Imports
Imperial Russian Stout, Belgian Strong Dark ale, Sour ale
Victory
Wild Devil Belgian IPA, Braumeister tettnang Pilsner
Weyerbacker
Heresy Imperial Stout and Insanity Barleywine
That's it. It was a lot of fun. I'll probably go aging next year.
