Help choosing tartan
OK, I know that eventually it will be my decision as to which tartan my next kilt will be in, but I wanted to give you fellow wearers some input on it, so as to narrow down my search.
Here are the preferences I have....
1. Needs to be good for all types of events, year round, and preferably to be matched with several ensembles without breaking the bank
2. I dont really care for the neon red and green "Christmas style" tartans
3. I would like to see you in a picture or two in a kilt in the tartan, so as to see how it looks in use
Any help in this area would be much appreciated
BTW, so far I like the Black Watch, Black Stewart, LEO memorial, American Heritage, Gordon Blue and Dress, and the Cambell on that looks like a lighter brighter version of the BW, just to give you an idea of my tastes......
Oh, and it will be coming from USA Kilts so if you can pick a tartan that they carry I would appreciate it a lot....if not, Lady Chrystel gets an order from me next....so have fun with it.

Do you have any Highland/Scots ancestry? If so, I'd use the tartan most closely related to your family.
If not, why not consider a universal tartan, such as Hunting Stewart or Caledonia?

With a name like Scotcop, I have to assume you're of Scottish ancestry. Why not do the Scottish thing and wear your own family tartan? Even if you don't like the colors of it, there may be options to get it into a color scheme you can live with (like weathered, muted, hunting, etc.).

Isle of Skye is a popular and universal (anybody can wear it) tartan that makes a very lovely kilt, and can be worn with a multitude of complimentary colors, as the kilt itself has purple, maroon, lovat green, navy blue, tan and even a couple thin pink stripes in it.
I also have a Caledonia Ancient I love but no pictures yet---I just got it a couple weeks ago, and it has some fairly nice coloration to it. I will try to post some soon.
If you have a clan affiliation check out their tartan in the various colorways---modern, ancient, weathered, muted----and see if any of those float your boat.
Black Stewart, Royal Stewart, Black Watch (too dark for me) are other "generic" tartans a lot of people like.
Good Luck, and pictures are a must OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN.

Get a tartan that means something to you, as well as looks good to your eye.
That, and don't forget to look for "ancient", "weathered", "dress", and whatever other variants you might find.
My opinion? Get the LEO Memorial Tartan. I'd wear that one...and I'm usually the guy you're aiming the radar at ...it has a lot of meaning, and it looks great. It is also not restricted.

As stated above, if you have blood lines to any of he Clans that’s where I would look. If not seeing how you seem to be an LEO, the National LEO Memorial Tartan would be well worth while.
Many States have their own Tartan as well as the US Army, Marine Corp and others.
If you personally don’t have bloodlines to any of the Clans and you are married look at your spouses bloodlines.
Good luck!!!

I'm a bit conservative, so I also selected a weathered tartan, in order to avoid the bright reds and greens. That's not to say that I won't want a brighter one in the future, in fact I already do.

Out of the choices you list, I'd pick the American Heritage. My USA Kilts Semi-Trad in that tartan has become one of my favorites because the Black, Red, White, and Blue seems to work well with lots of accessories, and about any look from black t-shirt super casual to black-tie.

Have a look at this thread for pictures of my Lindsay Modern double box pleat by Lady Chrystel. It's a beauty and you'll not be sorry if you go down that road.

For a USA kilt--non red, I'd say: Buccleuch, Albannach or Tara. They're on my 'gotta have someday' list
