Wee Kilt X-tra Pleats

Boldly I ripped after measuring carefully and am confident with the length and hem of the kilt. Not so sure am I with marking the apron and pleats.

I'm sewing this one for my wee son who is half the size of a man like me. Should I keep the same amount of fabric for the deep pleats and reverse pleats or can I get away with reducing that? If so, by as much as half?


Don't worry, all the kiddie scissors did was clip the tag from the fabric.

I'd think it might be good to include a little extra fabric (proportionally extra, I mean) to allow for alterations with growth. You could even incorporate a hidden pleat at the deep pleat.

Are you keeping some fabric in the hem to be let out later?

Yes, a 3" hem and I'm looking at hiding a pleat's worth of material on either side for growth which is what is eating into the deep pleat and the reverse pleat. I'm thinking now that I'm just going to have to consume those structural elements when he grows out.

Measured, marked basted and even sewed in the first seven pleats, then measured both the recipient and the pleats to see how I had done .... Result: Every stitch removed and back to square one. *sigh* I'll spend some time crunching the numbers anew and start marking again on Saturday. At least I know I've got the right tailor's chalk. All my former marks are gone. Two steps forward ...
