First Woman wins Gold Medal at Argyllshire Gathering

For the first time ever, a woman has won the Highland Society of London Gold Medal at the Argyllshire Gathering. Playing "Lament for Donald Duaghal MacKay", 18 year old Faye Henderson of Kirriemuir follows in the footsteps of her father, who won the Gold Medal in 1980, and her mother, who became the first woman allowed to compete at the major games many years ago. Well done her and from what I understand she gave a performance that will be remembered for a long while.

Two observations that I take from the picture and the video is how nice it is to see the lady pipers wearing tartan skirts and not kilts, sporrans, bulky hose and those awful ghillie things and to my eyes, look far better for it. Alright I know they are not (here anyway) partaking as a recognised band. Secondly, for those that want to match up the tartan for weddings have a look at the picture and notice all those different tartans, their colours and shades. What a magnificent sight! Matching tartans for weddings? Pah!

Two observations that I take from the picture and the video is how nice it is to see the lady pipers wearing tartan skirts and not kilts, sporrans, bulky hose and those awful ghillie things and to my eyes, look far better for it.

That fact made me smile, too, Jock! It is refreshing to see women dressing like women, and not pretending to be men. Seeing ladies wearing the kilt reminds me of Samuel Johnson well-known quotation, slightly altered:
"Sir, a woman's wearing the kilt is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all."

I was just enjoying seeing the women in their kilts - particularly the tall woman in the front row in the long kilt - what a wonderful swing it had.

Observe the swing, the pleats, the kilt pins - the pipers are all wearing kilts - other garments are differenced according to the wearer's preference, but the kilts - are kilts.
