Hair Sporran: Black on Black?
I've been playing around with L & M's "Design a Sporran" at the Scottish Tartan Museum's Gift Shop Website. I've been thinking a lot about evening sporrans lately and, being the thrifty sort, was thinking about a horsehair sporran that could also be part of a piper's getup.
Just for fun, I put together a sporran that had a black hair front with black tassels and I actually really liked it.

So, what do you think? Too much black? Not traditional enough?
I'm curious to know what the general opinion is!

I never would have thought of that combination, but I have to say I like it. Definitely non traditional but has a certain coolness to the look.

I think it is a fine, very traditional looking sporran.

Thank you, Sandy; I hold your opinion in very high regard and am now almost certain that I'll be ordering this sporran eventually!
That's not to say, however, that I don't want to hear the opinions of others!

It looks pretty good in that rendering, but I'd be willing to bet that in the real world (and real-world lighting) that the tassels may get "lost" in the background hair. If it were me, I'd change either the tassels or the main body to a slightly different color just so there's enough of a difference to notice.
But at the end of the day, all horse hair sporrans look great anyway. And tassels would be easy enough to change later, if you wish.

I agree with Sandy-- that's definitely traditional. Tobus's point is also well taken, that the black-on-black look may not work over well in some lighting conditions. Before you take the plunge, you might also want to look at it against the background of your tartan, on the off chance that all that black might "kill" the sett.
You might also want to investigate the possibility of having the cantle, chains, and bells, supplied in silver, instead of the standard chrome plated brass. Just a thought.

I'm okay with the tassels disappearing into the background from time to time - I actually think that will help to make the sporran less flashy than your usual hair sporrans.
As for how it looks on my tartan, I'll let the forum members be the judges:

That's just a computer-generated image of the tartan in the background, but I think it works to give a general idea of how they work together. There's also the possibility of a Chattan Tartan kilt in the future, though I'm not sure how well those two would work together...

One thing at a time! I have a fund set aside for a petition of arms - when all that is finished, I just may have to splurge on silver and personalize things a bit! I'm getting ready to order my very first kilt (so I won't have to borrow anymore) and have started working on finding accessories that I like - I'm not pulling the trigger on this just yet, but when I do, I may very well have my own arms with which to customize it (maybe with something like this). If I'm not to that point yet, I may just go with the cheap fixtures and upgrade them later.
