Kilted Thanksgiving!

This thanksgiving was the first time I have worn a kilt around the family. I got some odd looks at first but everyone opened up to the idea pretty fast, especially my Scottish grandmother. She says she is so happy that a member of this side of the family has taken an interest in the family history and the native Scottish wear. It seems I am the first one in the family for generations to wear a kilt as regular clothing and not just for special occasions! Even her brothers and her uncles had no interest in the kilt, even when they lived in Scotland and never wore one that she can remember.

Of course I got some odd ball questions. Since they know I am a musician my one cousin asked if I had taken up the bagpipes. Turns out he was serious though! He had been a brief member of a pipe band (as a bass drummer) when in college and had borrowed a kilt for a couple of performances. It stuck me as a strange mental image as he is half Chinese and looks very much his ancestry. Then again, if I had not grown my beard I would look my Yaqui ancestry more than the Scottish side of the family so who am I to say who would look out of place in a kilt?

For the most part everyone thought I looked rather good in the kilt and though I could tell that my step-father was a little confused and put off by it, it was a wonderful day with the family. My kid sister was especially pleased as she is a little off the wall herself.

For those that are wondering, I wore my Muted Sutherland, a black dress shirt, my black hunting sporran, and my cross emblem belt buckled kilt. And don't forget the 8" steel toe work boots! I wish I could share pictures but I forgot my camera!

A great first step! With time, they'll accept it as normal... and maybe some of them will even take an interest too.

I'd have probably skipped the steel-toed boots, though, and gone for a more traditional approach, this being a holiday-based family function. Especially when trying to drum up family interest in traditional Scottish attire. Maybe next holiday you could give that a whirl!

I too was kilted! I was in a MacDonald Modern and a black dress sporran and a black wool vest that I made myself. It was my first time kilted at a major family holiday and like biblemonkey, I found my family members to be curious but accepting.

Like Mikilt, I was wearing my MacDonald Modern with a nice dark blue sweater and my royal blue-dyed hose. Everyone loves it when I wear the kilt. The only negative was my 8 year old niece..."Uncle Tony, why are you wearing a skirt?!?" By the end of the day she was calling it a "Man-Skirt" She is rather rambunctious and quite the free spirit, so Man-Skirt was acceptable from her.
