kilt pin
What ideas are out there to keep the kilt pin from coming unfastend/unclasped?

As RiverKilt and others on this forum have said: "Run the pin through a bit of wide rubber band on the backside of the apron. The few times they come unpinned they at least are not going to slip away and be lost. Simple and effective."
If the pin is a blanket type pin, make sure you have the fastening end pointed downward, so that if it comes unfastened, it's less likely to fall off your kilt.
At least that's what the people on the forum more knowledgeable than myself advise!

Shaun pretty much gave the two best pieces of advice that I was going to say.
I've never had a kilt pin come unfastened, and I would think it would be pretty hard for that to happen. But the rubber band trick ought to solve it if it does.

You could squeeze the clasp shut with a pair of pliers, but that permanently affixes the pin to your kilt. Go with Ron's rubber band trick.

When given a choice, most people will choose.

***.
I often use a horse blanket pin (large looking safety pin) as a kilt pin and always make cure to apply it with the point downward.

I stole the rubber band idea from someone else, guessing its been around a long time. Some folks also run the back side pin through a small pencil eraser.
Kilt pins DO come unpinned. Even had one come undone while I was seated in a car - the back pin was sticking up vertical and fortunately I noticed it just before I was going to rest my hand on my leg which would have skewered my hand.
But, a piece of rubber band, or small pencil erasor run through the pin will keep you from losing your kilt pin when it does come unclasped.
And beware kilt pin addiction. Ham advised one kilt pin per kilt to save wear and tear from repeated poking.

Yes, this is helpful. I had the same thing happen in the car too. Pin sticking straight up. Nearly impaled my hand on it. The elastic band and pencil eraser are great tricks. I am relatively new to the board and realize that my questions are old hat to some of you guys. Thanks for patience. I like the idea of one pin per kilt. I saw a kilt that was quite damaged by the pins coming and going. Good advice.

Yes, I first read that one on here back in 2008, and recently shared it in another thread. It does work (& for the "safety pin" style of kilt pin too!)
