    Looking For MacDonald History

I have always been interested in the clans and septs of Scotland. I myself am a "Jenkins" boy, which has no direct clan affiliations. However this is where I get my Scottish blood (fathers side of course), as I looked more into the clans I decided that I should try my mothers side (German/Cherokee). Her maiden name is "Crum" and as I looked into this I found that one of the septs of Clan MacDonald is Crum. Any historians know why this has come to be? I'm extremely interested, and if Crum is a part of Clan MacDonald, does this give me access to MacDonald tartans and Clan Crests?

    Thanks for your time,
    Jake

I'm no historian, so I can't tell you why Crum is a sept of Clan Donald. Your mother's family certainly gives you an excuse to wear a MacDonald tartan and you could apply to join the clan if want to make it more official. That being said, I don't know of any legal restrictions on the various Clan Donald tartans, so you could just go ahead and wear it.

I am confused, you get your Scottish blood through your father, Jenkins senior?

Yes, the story is extremely confusing, but my Great(x4) Grandparents (fathers side), moved from Scotland to England, and from there migrated to America (through Ontario).

But it has no clan affiliation? I am just confused, is there a surname in your father's line that has affiliation with a clan at all? I would say whatever you are drawing your heritage from to begin with would be the path sooner sought.

I've never been able to look that far back, overtime as I get more research I guess we will find out.

    Greetings,

Here is some background info on the name 'JENKIN, JENKINS', Moray, Lanarkshire etc. 16th c. and 'CROMB' As CRUM; MACDONALD to GORDON...'CRUM, CROOM', Benderloch, MACDONALD.

JENKINS is associated with a place/district...you can look for a district tartan or find what clan occupied those areas and which could hold connections for you on your father's side.

CRUM is also associated with a place/district and clan MacDonald, the sept 'CRUM' belongs to an individual family, unless you can clearly trace your roots to that clan sept...then mostly like a location/district would hold greater connections for you on your mother's side.

Hope this info. sheds some more light on your roots,

    All the best,

    Graham

Another Note: you can wear whatever tartan you want...however you can not make claims of clanship if your not recognised as a member by a chief...chiefs are the sole authority on clan matters...and decide what tartans are recognised for the clan.

Post Names associated with Clan Donald

From the Clan Donald Society of the USA's list of names associated with the Clan:

•Cromb (76) Only those from Islay and must have originally been a MACCRUM.
•Crum (76) Only those from Islay and must have originally been a MACCRUM.

I would point out that Jenkins is also a common Welsh name, and that there is a tartan for that name but, from your current avatar, I see you have already found it.

Regarding any of your ancestors' surnames, I would suggest that the best way to find out to what tartans you may be "entitled" is to trace those surnames back to a specific place in Scotland. This is especially true of surnames that could as easily be Welsh or English as Scottish.

Well as a child my father always told me that his side of the family was Scottish, English, and Welsh, he never gave me much more other than that. Upon all of my genealogy research I have traced back far enough to my English roots, I'm having trouble getting any further than that.

However when I trace my mothers side I notice that I can easily find the Scottish generations there, her maiden name "Crum" (originally for MacCrum, Mac was dropped within generations) belongs to clan MacDonald, and then her mothers (my grandmothers) maiden name "Sharp" which belongs to clan Stewart.

I just need to do a bit more digging to find the rest of my fathers side.
