    Thai / American wedding

    Hi rabble,

So I found out that my wife's cousin, who is now living in Thailand, is coming back with his wife to have a American wedding. They were married in Thailand last month and they want his family to have part in their lives also. It's going to be a suit and tie wedding and I thought hey why not wear my kilt?!?
My issue is I don't have a great semiformal kilt kit. I have everything I need sans a waistcoat and jacket. I have a tweed sports jacket that I can convert but it has a center split in the back and I don't know what to do with it. But that thread is in the DIY help section.
So is it appropriate to ask them if I could wear my kilt? If I do wear it should I hire a proper jacket? Or converting the one I have will be fine.
    What would YOU do?

I can't imagine any reason to not at least ask for their opinion as far as wearing the kilt. Hopefully they say yes, but if they say no you have already solved your problem as far as whether or not to worry about a jacket. If they say yes my thoughts are that since you are already planning to do the conversion finish that and then decide if you think it came out well enough for a wedding. That is unless of course you are pressed for time. Then you may just need to rent the jacket so that you don't finish the conversion, decide it's not nice enough, and not be able to get a rental jacket.

What would I do? I wear the kilt as part of my every day attire. I see no reason not to wear it, nor do I see any reason to ask other people for permission. I was invited to the wedding of a friend of mine recently. He and his new bride are black. Not only was I the only one in a kilt, I was the only white guy there. And you know what? I was a huge hit, both with my friend's new bride and with their families. I never did understand the anguish over the issue of where to wear the kilt. You wouldn't ask permission to wear a red shirt, would you? What's the difference?

So here's a picture from my friend's wedding:

I was dressed in shirt, tie, and waistcoat for the wedding. Richard came over to me afterwards and told me that I looked like I was roasting, and told me to go change, so by the time this picture was taken, I wasn't even wearing shoes any more! So with that in mind, there is next to nothing that you can do to overshadow the events or to outshine the bride. I have been to numerous weddings where I've been the only one kilted, and it's been a complete non-event.
