"Jones-ing" a kilt jacket-- Query
Readers;
All the kilt jackets I have seen to date are single breasted, 1-2 buttons, round cut to the front.
Is there any 'fashion rule ' outlawing the cutting short a double breasted Saxon suit coat, to make a double breasted kilt coat? Or would this be 'too odd' to the spirit of the kilt coats as now worn?
It would have to be, of course short enough to shew the Sporran. Cuffs, shoulder straps and misc. could then be added, as in a Kosher Kilt Jacket.
Any thoughts out there?
Thanks

I don't know of any rule against it. I think the single-breasted jacket is the "norm" because it opens enough to show the waistcoat, and is never buttoned.
Make sure you post some pictures when you finish the conversion.

Here are a few double breasted models. They are geared more to formal attire but it does give you an idea.

To the kind commentators-Readers;
Thanks for the Ideas & comments. I have already made a double breasted short coat for my American Revolution Hobby, which works very well. That was the idea behid the question. And, Yes, I will find a 12yr old computer whiz to post both pictures(the historic coat first) and thus add to the collective knowledge.
Thanks for the Ideas.

I think Matt Newsome had a double breasted tweed jacket conversion some years ago. A bluish one from memory. Matt may have photos of it somewhere

aim high
I think the trick with a DB jacket is to get one with a high neck opening or gorge. That way,when you cut it off, you still have room for more than one set of buttons. If you are small, you might try starting with this jacket:

In general, I think military jackets tend to button higher than their civilian counterparts and are usually good for kilt jacket conversion because of this. If you look at the photos posted above, the jackets button higher than late model Double Breasted saxon coats.You may be able to get your hands on a 1960s DB coat that is cut high, but your average 1990s-forward is going to be a little low-slung.
Let's see those pictures.

Readers:
"MacLowlife" makes a Good Point" the Saxon DB coats are cut lower_something to watch out for-thanks.
I have the Photos of my 1st DB coat- I am searching for the Method to send them here(my computer is 'steam powererd'!) Also a Look at the Link shows a good cut to cut down, both in colour and pocket placements. But, sink me, I have not seen 'size small' since before Ho Chi Minh died!

I am entertaining the idea of wearing a double breasted waistcoat with my kilt, and like the German Navy dress jacket in the link above I think that the reproduction German WW2 Panzer jackets would look pretty sharp too. Of course I would cut off the piping and shoulder boards. There are black panzer jackets and field grey assault gun jackets at the following link.

If you don't like the idea of wearing german wool I have found many civilian equivalents online.

My opinion: Do as you like! As much as I am a traditionalist, the kilt isn't a museum piece (though it my have ancient roots) but a living garment - wear it how you like with what you like! That is how fashion is created! The kilt has been reinvented a few times itself, so why not the rest of the outfit? By the way, by all accounts, the formalised Highland outfits as we know them today are a relatively new tradition.
Personally, I like to look at how the kilt has been - and is worn - by others and then making up my own mind for how I want to wear mine (once I get it, that is!):
One outfit is a black-on-black version with a kilt in Dark Island Black, black Victorian wing-collared dress shirt with coloured rouche tie(or white shirte with black rouche tie), black velvet Argyle jacket with satin lapels, black satin waistcoat and finally a black sealskin sporran (that part is unlikely to happen now - this image was from before I realised sealskin has been banned).
Another is a kilt in "my" tartan Danish thistle with an off-white Jacobean Ghillie shirt, desert boots and chunky knitted off-white socks.
Or...
It is great to follow tradition, but in the end YOU have to wear the kilt, so YOU have to be happy with what you wear! Enjoy!
