Fashion Question
Readers;
What are the Views of the Readers on the wearing of non-elastic suspenders(braces) with a Kilt? My thought was the button on sort. I wear braces all the time in Saxon cloathes(otherwise my breeks fall down, or my belt is tight enow to stop the blood flow!)
Any views?

Re: Fashion Question
I would have to go with the button type. I have heard of a few on here over the years that have. But I wonder if you are wearing it correctly, or if it was measured too large if you need to use braces.

I have worn braces with all my clothing for years. I find it less necessary with a kilt but still do it especially if not wearing a belt. With a waistcoat or jacket the braces won't be seen anyway...go for it.

Whether or not it is necessary depends on your shape. I'm an inverted cone. They're necessary.

Re: Fashion Question
When a kilt is made for you, the assumption seems to be that you may get bigger but you won't lose weight. I actually lost 25 lbs in a few weeks when I got sick this spring and my two favourite kilts would no longer even stay on me, no matter fit. Braces (suspenders) were an option.
Luckily the company that made them (McCalls) were able to move the buckles.

I agree with Fr Bill
There's nothing wrong with wearing braces (suspenders) if you feel more comfortable. Simple clip ons will work fine

Re: Fashion Question
Many kilts used to have the buttons already sewn in ready for braces (suspenders). I don't know if the braces were hidden by jackets or not though!
I have worn them on the odd occasion especially when doing a lot of sitting, eating and drinking and a belt would have to be loosened during the festivities. They were under a jacket though so only I knew. Maybe it was because once upon a time I was concave but now am convex!!!!!!

Re: Fashion Question
Yep, I've seen lots of pictures of vintage kilts with buttons sewn in for braces. But I can't say I've ever seen any vintage pictures where the braces were worn visibly. I'd be interested in seeing any such pictures if they're out there. Otherwise, I have to believe that it was proper to wear the braces only under a waistcoat/jacket/etc.

In strict terms it IS only proper to wear braces under a waistcoat and jacket. That convention applies to suits as well as kilts but only in more formal circles
However, if wearing a kilt in a more "modern" and informal fashion I see no reason why you could not have them showing as a fashion accessory

Re: Fashion Question
So when attaching the buttons for the braces I assume that the four front buttons would attach to the inner apron. Is that correct, or is there a reason to do it differently?
