Can you make a Kilt "bigger"?

I've had my kilt now for about 9/10 years and in that time I've put on a few pounds!!
I'm currently using the last notch in the buckles and even then, the Kilt is awfully tight.

Can anything be done to make the Kilt fit more comfortable or am I looking at buying a new one, or even worse, having to lose weight!!

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Two easy methods to add a few inches: move the buckles or buy extenders. There are any number of posts here on both topics, I'll do some searching and try to come back with links.

    from SW Oklahoma!

Rocky over at USA Kilts (one of our sponsors) has extension straps as well as numerous other vendors.

Re: Can you make a Kilt "bigger"?

Making a kilt bigger is usually not easy and moving the straps and buckles will be unlikely to work unless there is already extra space on the under apron

Extension straps are one way of gaining an extra inch or two but you will almost certainly notice the straps because they do not actually make the kilt itself bigger, just extend the aprons out of alignment, so the kilt will still LOOK too small

Many kilts have extra fabric hidden inside but to find and use it is not a task for the unwary. Unless you have experience of sewing it might be better to take the kilt to a kilt maker for alteration. They can give you a better idea of what is actually possible with your kilt

I'd have to disagree ,ever so slightly with David, in saying that moving the buckles/straps isn't such a difficult thing, of course it needs to be done carefully, but it will help you to find a few extra inches without too much difficulty. Of course it's not ideal from a perfectly fitted kilt idea, but it's certainly workable.
Extension straps are workable as well and don't need any sewing, and often the straps are hidden by a belt/waistcoat/jumper/jacket.
None of these solutions are perfect but they do allow you to keep wearing a favourite kilt whilst saving for a new one!

But I was working on the assumption that the key strap, the one on the under apron, will already be positioned at the extreme right hand edge (left hip) and so there would be nowhere to move it to. Different, of course, if we were trying to make the waist smaller which is relatively easy

If so, and I've seen very few kilts where the strap was positioned a few inches in from the edge of the apron, it would need to be taken apart at the lining and the apron widened, which ceases to be a minor job. That would be easy to you and me but not necessarily easy for anyone else

If there is room at the edge of the apron then fine, but I doubt it will be a couple of inches unless the kilt has been taken in previously
