    Translation, please !!

I am hoping someone can help me out translating the following phrase:

    Se farmad'ni treobhadh

I am writing an article about the Highland Clearances. This phrase appears in an article in the Inverness Journal from 1853. I believe it refers to tenants being allowing to stay on their lands. I do see the word FARM in there...

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Translation, please !!

In the case you get no other answer, I cracked the dictionary. S e - is a form of 'it is' Farmad - means envy or jealousy and Treobhadh -refers to the act of ploughing. ni - is the most unclear part for me . Could mean circumstance or a form of 'do' as in (do this )or a negative influnce on treobhadh. (not ploughing) I am in the learning of building a sentence (ann a Gaidhlig) in the Gaelic. Hopefully you will get a better answer and I will learn more as well.

’Se farmad a ni an treòbhadh — envy gets the ploughing
done (a sort of Gaelic ‘keeping up with the Joneses’)

Thanks so much for that -- deadline for article is tomorrow, and I did not want to submit it without a translation. I write regular pieces for the Clan Mackintosh of North America newsletter -- known as The Mists of Moigh.

    Ruaraidh -- Thank you also.
