Kilted hunting?
Does anyone here hunt wild game kilted? I would have done a search, but i'm on my stinking phone, so typing this all in is difficult enough. Do you have any pics of yourself on a hunt in your kilt? What kind of gear do you take with you. I was looking at the backpacking thread and hunting kilted came to mind, so i thought i'd ask.

Re: Kilted hunting?
sigh.
Just a might-have-been for me. I was all set a few years ago to go boar-hunting kilted, with dogs and a boar spear, to celebrate my birthday. But alas, the friend who was setting it up with a northern California ranch had the arrangement fall through at the last minute.

Re: Kilted hunting?
Before this last season, I went on a pre-hunt scout kilted... just hiking through the areas, looking for pig wallows and clover patches so I knew where to come when the season started.
That one day was enough for me, thanks. In Florida we have Palmetto thickets that will do a number on uncovered knees. This was early november so at least the mosquitos weren't out in full force, but it was still pretty sucky.
I still think a mossy oak utility kilt would be awesome in a better climate/ecosystem.
Have fun and throw far. In that order, too. - o1d_dude

Crap. Thank you Joshua for instantly crushing my happy mental imagery of hunting in a kilt. Upon further thought, I just don't see anyone happily tramping through the Florida underbrush in a kilt. Of course, it does depend on the terrain, so some areas might not be too bad.

Re: Kilted hunting?
Every 12th August, me and a few pals take to the hills on our annual haggis shoot, tricky little creatures who seem to realise that we are kilted and keeping running into the jaggy nettles. We like to hang them for about 14 days until quite ripe then deep fry them along with Mars Bars

Re: Kilted hunting?
There was fellow on the backpacking thread that wore WW2 era leg gaiters to protect his lower legs from briars etc. You guys might think of trying something along those lines. Most of our hunting seasons here in Indiana are during cooler months, so i think the leg gaiters might be a pretty welcome addition for me.

Re: Kilted hunting? probably not...
There WAS a discussion a while back, maybe in Traditional. As I remember, it centered on the contrast between British/ European stalking and shooting gear and North American hunting and shooting gear. Sooner or later someone will observe that "hunting" is done on horseback in the UK, or at least used to be. I think the problem is almost all North American game lives in or near places that will tear up your kilted knees. I suppose a lucky man with an amazing dog might stand more or less still and shoot some kind of fowl without ever needing to worry about briars, but I am not that man.
Pictures of driven pheasant or grouse shooting would seem to depict a sport that could be accomplished kilted, but I have never seen people doing it that way. I am sure there is a good reason and somebody from the UK will chime in soon to tell us.
In THE QUEEN, there are scenes of people stalking a stag. None of the main characters, who have been kilted in other scenes, is wearing a kilt, but some attendant or minor member of the party is briefly shown kilted nearby.

Re: Kilted hunting?
So before the thread gets closed down, which weapon are you thinking of using to hunt this wild game - Claymore, Basket Hilt, Dirk or Sgian Dubh?
