3 button waistcoat with argyll
Dear Rabble,
To my eye, a Prince Charlie looks great with a 3 button waistcoat. But what of other jackets? Do only 5 button waistcoats go with Argyll/Wallace style jacket?
I am having trouble picturing it. Thanks in advance.

I have seen pictures of a three button vest with an Argyll jacket, and I thought it looked good. But I have yet to see the combination in real life, which brings up my questions of three button vest with or without lapels with an Argyll jacket? On a side note, when I wear black tie, I generally wear the Argyll with a silver buckled belt, and without the 5 button vest.

To my eye, the five button vest is fine with a long tie for day wear; however, it looks to high for formal. Three looks better to me.

In the old days at least a black Argyll with silver buttons was regarded as being just as formal as any other sort of Evening jacket, so a formal waistcoat would be perfectly suitable.
Here it is, in a vintage catalogue, the "Dress Argyle" (sic)

While I completely agree that a typical Argyll jacket with an evening (i.e., 3-button) waistcoat is perfectly suitable for evening wear, I think that the one in OC Richard's catalogue would be even more suitable for evening wear as it appears to have silk facings and peak lapels, both of which are generally considered to be more formal than self-facings and notch lapels.
It's a beautiful jacket - I wish they still made them today!

Guilty!
Hi Guys,
for I am not a great PC fan (I am repeating myself ) I really like the 3-button waiscoast/Argyll combination.

@ OC_Richard: Thanks for posting this picture..it was my main motivation to try this combination...with a jabot I might prefer a 5-button waiscoat though.
Mackinnon by the way calls it "dress jacket"in his magnificent little book and recomends it for informal and formal evening occasions and for day dress occasions.

I don't think I've ever seen an Argyll like that, with satin lapels, in the flesh. It would be a cool thing!
About now somebody will post something to the effect that "that's just an old catalogue, nobody would ever really wear that" so for their benefit I offer this old photo of a "Dress Argyll"

Thanks so much for all the replies and examples. My most formal jacket is a Wallace. Now I am looking for a three button vest to wear with it.
Cheers,
