Should a sporran always be worn?
I have fallen in love with my kilt while wearing it at a couple of renaissance fairies that I work. That kilt is my grandfathers wool kilt.
I just got my first utility kilt from Verillas in green which I love.
My question is tha since this one has cargo pockets I have room for my wallet, keys, phone, etc. which bring a up the question of the sporran.
Obviously this was required when there are. I pockets.
But should the sporran always be worn regardless of pockets?

If you don't it looks more like a skirt than a kilt, pleats or not.

My personal opinion only.
I do not wear a sporran with my solid colored Utility type kilts. The Utilikilt and those that cam afterwords seem to have buttons or snaps on the front to give visual interest.
And, they usually have plenty of pockets so a sporran is not really needed.
So I don't.

I wear the kilt because: Swish + Swagger = Swoon.

We have members that use ammo cartridge pouches as a sporran with the cammo or more rugged utility kilts. I wear a small (childs size) sporran with my utility kilt when dressed up. For work, in the same kilt, I forgo the sporran.

I don't wear a sporran with my non-wool, non-tartan kilts. I think it would look silly. And with all the pockets going on, and the hairy legs sticking out the bottom, I don't think there is much risk of it looking skirt-like.

When I wear my utilikilt especially while playing paintball I wear a military style travel portfolio as my sporran. Pockets carry pb pods and couple water bottles, the portfolio carries my squegee, towels and 12 gram co2 cartridges. I love arriving at the field in a sleeveless tshirt, kilt and a pump marker. Majority of others on field are covered head to toe in camo and padding. Usually a few chuckles until after the first game or two then they realize
1. they are hot and sweaty and their masks are fogging up
2. it will, possibly, only hurt if you get hit.
If I'm just going around town with the Mrs. or running errands I go without a sporran.

So, another vote against wearing a sporran? Or have I missed a sporran style called "portfolio"? Or is a portfolio something more like a courier satchel, while not quite being a basic pouch. Anyway, on this forum for kilt wearers, your experience establishes the superiority of the kilt in yet another field of human activity. Well done, sir, have a dram!

Perhaps the key is tradition. A sporran is traditionally worn with a traditional kilt. If one is not wearing a traditional kilt, one may choose to forgo traditional accouterments.

It is a 6in by 9in courier pouch. It has a strap that I can use like a sporran strap or it has a loop on the back so that I can wear it on my belt.

I only own one utility kilt, and don't wear a sporran with it. Whenever wearing a more traditional tartan kilt I'd say to wear one, as others have pointed out, without one it kinda just looks like a skirt. Plus it's a necessity for non-utility kilts.
