Back in 1986 or 1987, I had traveled to a town for a wedding of a good friend, His bride was Scottish so we were all kilted for the affair. On the way home I pulled into this gas station for fuel, it was a really small town, maybe 200 people lived there. I had just finished filling up and paid for the gas, a man followed me out side and told me that I was under arrest, I first laughed at him because I thought this was a joke, turns out he was the town Marshall and he said I had alot of nerve to wear women's clothing out like that, I tried to explain that I was wearing a Scottish Kilt and was not a woman s attire. He said he had never heered of such a thing and no that is not misspelled, the way alot of hill folk talked. So he placed me under arrest and I went down to the local sheriff office to be booked and charged with indecency in public, they didn't have a jail, so I was let go and was back there in a week for my trial. I went back in the same kilt, thinking that I would show the judge what i was wearing and explain to him, I also took some pictures with me of men kilted. When the judge came into the room and saw me, he said out loud where all could here, "hey nice kilt". I explained why I was there, he immediately called the marshall to the desk and admonished him good. For his ignorance the judge told the sheriff that he would work the next 2 weeks without pay. Made the man apologize to me, and he apologize to me and said I was free to go. It took me along time to live that one down, my friends or so called friends had fun with that for many months after.

This may sound stupid and many may not agree, but in a show of good faith and emphasize the benevolence of many Scots, I would have made some sort of donation to the Sheriff to offset his loss of two weeks of income.
    Regards,
    Tom

If he didn't know, then he didn't know. Why should he know? On the other hand, asking for a donation might press a Scot more than somewhat!

Not knowing is understandable. Using the force of law to be a bully is not. I would imagine that the judge's decision was weighted more towards the latter.

I can't agree. I don't see that the OP was compensated for his wasted time so why should he have gone even further by rewarding the officer's bad behavior. Clearly the judge didn't care for having the court's time wasted either.

With authority comes responsibility to wield it appropriately. I think Tobus is correct and that the officer chose to throw his weight around and it backfired.

    Interesting responses...

So a municipal judge docked the pay of the elected chief of municipal law enforcement? Just making sure my understanding is correct.

If that's the case, can I interest any of you in a unicorn? I breed 'em.

    The law

What is it that the police say to us? Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Well he was ignorant, probably overzealous, and apparently not so
worldly. I don't believe I have ever run into a soul who has not heered or seen a kilt, either on TV, photos of the Royal family and such.
    Be seeing you.
