Thumbs up Message to Stillwater kilts

To stillwater kilts and forum members,

I am posting this here fore member feedback and if and when SWK personell come to the board they see this message and perhaps go with it.

In another post I have suggested that SWK start making a box pleat alternative, and there are a few bonuses to doing so.

Box pleating is perhaps the first style of pleating that was used when kilts became a tailored garment
Kilts made with a limited ammount of yardage look better than a knife pleated kilt when it comes to the number of pleats. I'm my case knife pleating on a kilt for bigger (heavier) guys does not look that good when kiltmakers use a limited amount of fabric.
I also believe I have read that box pleating actually uses on average less fabrick than knife pleating

So to sum up the bonuses of box pleating for a kiltmaking company that is already affordable to the men on the ground
    1. Historical
    2. Better for big guys
    3. More economical to make

Now, for some feedback from xmarks members...

I love the box pleat and the double box pleat. I would like to own a double box pleat in MacLean Hunting Modern.

    Re: Message to Stillwater kilts

Now a pretty basic question, but have you asked Jerry? He is a very nice guy and responds pretty quickly. Stillwater does not make their own kilts and perhaps the kiltmaker they use does not have the ability to make them. If that were the case the issue becomes moot. I'd send Jerry an email.

If you really like box kilts there are a couple of well established kiltmakers regularly on this forum. I own box pleats from both Keltoi and Skye Highland Outfitters and of course Matt Newsome makes them as well. You can't go wrong with any or them.

SWK actually did a run of box pleated Leatherneck tartan kilts a while back. They looked awesome, and I've been hoping they would repeat it with other tartans. Who knows? I may ask Jerry about getting me a box pleated Black Stewart in the future.

You can always contact Jerry and ask for one to be specially made. I got a Black Stewart made after doing so.

    Re: Message to Stillwater kilts

As has been said, Jerry has always been as accommodating as possible...nary ever a cross word said here about Stillwater.

But they pretty much have a set product line and it looks like they have pretty good grasp of where they are in the market product and price point-wise. Stillwater has rolled out some innovative products in the past and may do so in the future. One thing Jerry seems to be, though, is a pretty damn smart businessman and I'm sure that any decision that he would make on your recommendations would be based on his not inconsiderable experience in the kilt business.

As Seanachie said, there are several kiltmakers associated with this forum who could accommodate you and (with all due respect to Stillwater) you'd probably get your wish quicker by going through one of them than waiting for Jerry to assess the practicality of going into production of a whole line of box pleated kilts that might have a limited appeal.

There has always been on and off discussion about why Stillwater sells only a 24" length and it always basically comes down to the fact that that's the best average size to make 'em and you can always make your own adjustments after you have the kilt in your own hot, little hands. Always seemed a practical approach to me...I'd suggest that the box pleat thing is sorta the same kinda thing.

    Best

I think part of the OP has to do with price as well, which puts my double box pleat from Lady Chrystel on my whish list, instead of my to buy list.

    This.

Nothing wrong with making a suggestion for Jerry to think about, but it's HIS business.

If you really, really want a box pleat kilt, there are other ways to get one, including making your own. Just so you know, all the reasons you quoted as to why they'd be good for Jerry to sell, apply to you making your own. They use less material. They require less sewing. Etc.

This was just suggestion. It isn't my intention to tell hil how to run his bussiness.

    Re: Message to Stillwater kilts

If they do decide to offer box pleated kilts (Wool heavyweight versions preferred), I REALLY hope that they offer a proper 93rd Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders regimental kilt.
