Ghillies w/ Ghillie Flaps?
I have seen photos of this style of Ghillie Brogues before:
but have never seen them around my area in person. I actually like the style of these (for wear at games etc) and was curious if anyone knew of an on-line supplier in black (and EE if possible?).
The ones pictured are very nice, but at $2,575.00 CDN that's more than a wee bit steep for me!
A little background on the one's pictured:
Custom-made Gilley Brogues made from 200 year old Catharina von Flensburg leather.
These come with tongues, or "Gilley" flaps, that can be removed for regular town or country wear. The tongues are traditional with country Highland dress.
...you can find out more at:
http://www.celticempire.com/Merchant..._Code=footwear
Also, is there another (more correct) term for this style of Ghillie?
Thanks.

Well by the looks of them I would just call those Brogues, expensive ones I grant you,With a leather flap that is, as you say detachable. We wear the flaps when out on the moor in August to stop heather seeds etc. getting into the shoe and making life uncomfortable. That is all.I have several pairs of flaps lurking around the house. We used to get the local cobler to make them for us.I have no idea where to get new ones, but HOGGS of FIFE might be worth a try.

Thanks for the information.
One further question: would these be worn on "regular" brogues?
The reason I ask is I have never seen laces worn with them (like the ghillies that lace up ones ankle).
Thanks again.

They are "regular" brogues----with an added optional flap----they lace up exactly as any normal shoe. They are nothing like ghillies.

Wingtips are brogues but not all brogues are wingtips. Brogues refer to shoes decorated with punched holes and serrated leather. Wingtips are brogues where the decoration on the toe resembles the shape of wings.
That said the term wingtips is frequently used to describe all brogues, particularly in the US.
Hope that helps.

My Grandmother talked about brogues with tongues. She always thought they looked smart with a kilt. My Great Aunt once mentioned that some men would even affix a silver buckle to the flap. I've never seen, nor has anyone confirmed it but my Great Aunt would be 120 if she was still alive, so she goes back a bit. I wouldn't dismiss the possibility that it was done in the Highlands 100 years ago, but I doubt it was wide spread.
edit*(I do know that some pipers wear them but I have never seen anyone else do it, although i think it looks quite smart)

I have an old pair of golf shoes with flaps like that - and I seem to remember one of the golf catalogs selling skirts or flaps or what-ever they are called to put on regular shoes.
