When mills run out of fabric
I occasionally read the penalty box from time to time, mostly to see what not to do. One such thread was a rant against Scotweb, and it got me thinking about my last order.
This past May I ordered a casual kilt that would be made from material from Batley mill. I had my delivery date pushed back a couple of times until September. I never asked about the delays really, and eventually the Scotweb staff informed me that the mill had temporarily shut down production. Does this happen often? or has it ever happened to you when ordering a kilt?
BTW, they refunded my order and I used that and some extra money laying around to get an 8 yard from a different mill. I can only say that I am very excited to get, and I hope that there are not any delays. i want to be able to wear it to one of the formal dinners on my honeymoon cruise in December.

Many factories close down for 2-3 weeks in the summer. Batley's however, appears to be done for good. See below:

They probably referring to England, not the UK as a whole.

But they said UK, not England. I doubt the mistake would be made there. Let's see if we can name them. I know of Lochcarron, Marton and Batley. Am I missing any others?

They said tartan mills. Could that mean that this was a more narrow specialty than most others do?

The article said "one of the last three manufacturers of tartan cloth in the country."
They cannot mean to include Scotland by this statement, as I can rattle off the names of more tartan manufacturers than that in realtively short order -- Lochcarron, Strathmore, D. C. Dalgliesh, House of Edgar. Plus Geoffrey Tailor has it's own weaving facility. There are others in Scotland, as well. McCalls. Johnstons of Elgin. No doubt I'm missing others.
On the other hand, if they mean England, the only tartan manufacturers I was aware of in England were Marton Mills and Bately. That's two. There's probably another I'm not familiar with, which would make the three referred to in the article.

What about the Welsh Tartan Centre... is that what the article is referring to?

Ummm ... but that would be in Wales, not England
ETA: I just noticed that on page 2 of the article they said there will be a bankruptcy sale and all the fabric in stock will be sold off. I wonder just how much tartan they had in stock?
