Re: "Old Sporran" on eBay, yikes, 1700s?

I just took a look at this and it appears that it didn't sell and right now the starting bid is $30.00. It's interesting to look at but I highly doubt that it's as old as they say it is. I've been doing leather work for years and I've seen saddles and saddlebags that are used everyday and the leather looks like that after 5 years of being out in the weather with no care.

Why are we still talking about this hideous, non-sporran? I am amazed at how long this discussion as lasted on the fourm. Hahaha!

    Cheers,

It's fun and fairly non-confrontational, unlike the dreaded "W" word when discussing hose.

I just think it's interesting the lengths the seller seems determined to go to in order to sell this thing as a sporran.

5 days to go on the auction and its up to $122.00!?

It would be curious to see the thing up close . . . but not over $100 worth of curious.

Now listed as "possibly from the 1800's" and with the following addition:

"This item has created quite a stir. I have had numerous inquires from experts to armchair historians in Scottish memorbilla. Some have stated that the style is not indicative of the 17th century and it probably would not have survived more than 100 years. As stated in the discription, I am not a historian and cannot gaurantee the authenticity, however I have represented the item to best of my knowledge."

You might be on to something here. The shaped tack/studs do have a very Middle Eastern/Western Asian look to them, and goodness knows the Highland Regiments spent a fair bit of time in Pakistan and India.

    ith:
Ha ha yes....I was one of those "armchair historians" who wrote them:

    "Hello

I think you may want to consider revising the description in your auction.
I don't claim to be an expert, but am a leather worker and "armchair historian" has done plenty of research regarding historical sporrans, who has seen plenty of leather in collections and museums first hand, and despite what the Museum of Scotland says....My honest opinion is that your sporran is not as old as you suspect.
#1 Your sporran is not consistent with styles of that era.

#2 The leather, however well protected it might have been, simply does not look that old.
Leather that has been untouched for 5 decades dries out, cracks and/or falls apart, I've seen it happen with articles made as recently as the 1960's....But it's condition after 25-30 decades???"

I think my mom bought something similar at a garage sale back in 1993!

Re: "Old Sporran" on eBay, yikes, 1700s?

The story just does not ring true.

A Scottish family just gives an American soldier a 300 year old heirloom - I don't believe it.

"presented to him in memory of their late son" - I do not know of any UK family that would do that.

It sounds like a made up story to account for a bit of old tat.

    Regards

    Chas

That 'octo-sporran' is worth about $2 at best!!! What fools!

I'm not a historian, by a long shot (I only play one on t.v.).
    My question is:

    What the hell is that?!!!!!

If I were to bid on this, could I wear it with my kilt, white hose and a flat cap*? I could dress up the ensemble with a regular length suit coat I have, perhaps with some medals I bought at the pawn shop on it. And a fly plaid. And a dirk, or maybe a sword.

*indoors of course. Outdoors I'll wear a pith helmet and a feather bonnet* AT THE SAME TIME! MUAHAHAHAH!

*My feather bonnet also has red-and-white :dicing on it to show my allegiance to Ralston/Purina.
