I had to vote tartan as I do not yet have a solid kilt, that is something I must rectify soon.

Does it feel more tartan or more solid when you put it on?
Do you feel the need to search for the answer in an expanding square pattern, a creeping line pattern, or do you call out the dogs?
(OK, enough bad allusions to our mutual SAR work.)
As for me, I like to wear both at the office - though the solid olive mocker was the first to debut there. (The solid kilts seem to bring more "he can wear a kilt, why can't I wear jeans" kinds of remarks at work than the tartans do, which is interesting, but neither here nor there for this thread.)
Out in the woods I think I prefer the solids, if only because I'm less concerned about a "wait-a-minute vine" trashing a solid piece of twill than I am a much more expensive piece of wool. (Even irrational fears are still fears, no?)

I am still looking for a left handed tartan (not a left handed kilt)

I own both types. I wear my UK orginal most. I save my tartans for ren faires and special occ. int:

I chose tartan. I wear my kilt (part time) to celebrate my heritage. To me a kilt is a tartan kilt. I don't think I'd ever get a solid kilt just because I think there would always be a tartan I would want first.

I have one solid color, but I prefer the tartans. Just my preference. Every one is a different color. I seldom get the "wearing a skirt" comments when wearing a tartan. My favorites are the American Heritage and the MacKenzie. I have no plans on buying more solids.
Would Robert define what a "left-handed tartan" is? I'm not familiar with the term. Although I am left handed.

As a part-timer, I've chosen to concentrate on the tartan. To me, it's just an integral part of what a kilt is. Maybe, when I have more money, I'll change my mind -- the tweed kilts from Matt's museum look very nice -- but for the moment, I'm all about plaid.

It is just a very small attempt at humor.
But seriously would it not be a wonderful thing if we leftys had a tartan we could call our own? Think about it all you southpaws out there.

I have both and I love them all.

I find it interesting that there aren't any people so far that have preferred solids over tartans exclusively.
