In spite of owning a couple of black solids, I'm an old reactionary: it's tartans all the way for me! As a general rule, solids dont get recognised as kilts here, whereas a tartan screams KILT!!!! to the unwashed masses. Then there's the whole "hey, I'm a *insert clan here* & proud of it" thing.

I like both, have both, wear both. But I only wear tartan when dressing up.

I like both, thought I don't have a solid kilt yet. I am like Riverkilt, solids will give me a chance to wear patterened shirts with it. Just another on the ever growing list of kilt wants.

For me, a kilt maker newbie, I prefer the tartans. They are always a challenge to keep the stripes aligned. Making a solid is interesting and I have looked at it but have not had the interest in getting any material in a solid. Maybe it is just the engineer in me that likes the fact that you must "engineer" the kilt to make a tartan work.

I prefer a tartan, because a solid just kind of looks like a skirt to me. No offense intended to those who wear them, they look good on you guys. I just don't look right in one.

I only have tartan kilts, but I am seriously considering a saffron, although I'm not sure that really a solid kilt. It's fairly traditional while I tend to think of solids as being made of canvas in khaki, OD, or something like that.
I have actually considered a kilt in khaki or OD, but I don't know. I'm not sure when I would wear it or why. I kind of like that looks of them on other folks, but I don't know about me. Kind of stodgy, ain't I?

You are only authorized to purchase a solid after you have your Leatherneck tartan kilt.
Carry on, Marine.

I used to not care for the solid colors, but I have come to my senses.

I have both solid and tartan and have no preference. However, as Raptor mentioned above, the tartan is readily recognisable as a kilt whereas other people are unsure of the solid. The tartan usually draws some Scottish-aligned comments but the solid rarely gets a mention from which I deduce they don't want to become involved with someone they are unsure of.

I voted "both" - currently I only have solids, and that is definitely what my wife prefers I wear, tho' I do hope to get a tartan (or three) down the road. Time will tell.
