I seem to recall reading somewhere that Scotty's accent was based on a radio operator from Aberdeen that Doohan knew during the war.

Jimmy Doohan also invented the Klingon language for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The language has since been extended by Mark Okrand and the Klingon Language Institute, but it was developed by Doohan

I saw on www.startrek.com today that the "official future birthplace of Montgomery Scott" is Linlithgow in the year 2222.

"Scotty" May not have been one of the "Big Three" but he was big enough for me. He was a grand man altogether!

Glad I searched the threads first before starting a new one...
I'm a big fan of ST:TOS going waaay back and last night I caught an episode called "By Any Other Name". In clear view, inside of Scotty's crew quarters, is his kilt hanging on the wall with horsehair sporran. You can also see a shot of his bagpipes as well.
In this particular scene Scotty, in an attempt to take the Kelvins neutralizer, gives him massive quantities of alcohol to intoxicate him. First he gives him Sorian brandy but when that runs out he gives him his secret stash of Scotch whisky...needless to say, that does the trick. LOL
Funny, now that I wear kilts I notice things like this. I've seen this episide many times before and they never got my attention.

Yes, Doohan is from the Irish Ó Dubháin, meaning descended from Dubhán (little dark one).

The only troubling thing about this episode was the death of the Yeoman. She was a red shirt so you kinda expect the worst to happen but once they leave the planet she was forgotten. Later Kirk convinces Rojan(sp?), the lead Kelvan, to work with the Federation instead of against them but all you really want is some sort of payback for the yeoman.
Ok, sorry, geeked out for moment...carry on.
LOL
